[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hi there! I've followed this golden build with very good success! However, instead I am using an i9-9900K with 64GB of HyperX Predator 3600Mhz RAM. BIOS has been tweaked as well as EFI and all seems to be good.

However, I am noticing one small issue that is bugging me: Whenever the system goes through the initial verbose boot phase/screen, at the end of this process (both during installation and after) my display loses signal, and I have to unplug the HDMI cable from the GPU and reinsert it, then the display will reconnect and works.

I am running a Sapphire AMD Radeon RX 580 GPU. Any ideas what might be the issue here?
Hey @CaseySJ ,

I just did the update from Mojave to Catalina 10.15.2 and followed your update guide and precautions. The installation went well it seems, but something screwed up with the GFX card. I'm on a VEGA 64. The computer initially gives the screen a signal but when I reach the part where the V-RAM is tested (pink glitchy lines) the screen looses the signal and does not get it back.

When remotely connecting to the machine it boots up properly but it looks a bit fishy in the System Info, etc. Please see the screen shots. The GFX card shows up, but not under the main "About screen" for ex, and it does not find the monitor but says "Built in screen, 23 inch". Any idea what I can do?

Thanks again for an amazing guide and build!
All,

This is a fairly common issue. Please search this site using relevant keywords. Also look at the Post-Installation --> Graphics forum and the Catalina Desktop Support forum. You might try enabling CSM Support in BIOS.

If anyone has specific suggestions, please let us know.

Hi @CaseySJ,

does your comp sleeps and wakes well? I still have some issues with sleep and wake. When comp goes sleep and after and I will try to wake it, it wakes well. But when I leave it overnight, it wakes by-self but doesn't go back to the proper sleep. Interestingly when I press CAPS button on keyboard, it changes status, led becomes green when pressed on. But comp does not wake.

Code:
2019-12-31 15:47:20 +0200 Sleep Entering Sleep state due to 'Idle Sleep':TCPKeepAlive=inactive Using AC (Charge:0%) 686 secs
2019-12-31 15:58:46 +0200 Wake Wake from Normal Sleep [CDNVA] : due to XDCI CNVW/HID Activity Using AC (Charge:0%)
2019-12-31 16:33:48 +0200 Sleep Entering DarkWake state due to 'Idle Sleep':TCPKeepAlive=inactive Using AC (Charge:0%)

Yes, sleep and wake work fine. I never let my system sleep for long periods of time (i.e. overnight) so that use case is not something that I've tried. Please see below for troubleshooting sleep-related problems:

So you actually may have similar issue? Could you try it on the nearest future?

I am back.
I had to change the motherboard because the RAM slot 1 and 2 didn't work.
In the meanwhile the Fenvi board has also arrived. So I unplugged the aio to connect the Fenvi ,and I solved wake and sleep problem.
I also upgraded from Mojave to Catalina without any problem, only I Just got scared because during install process, the screen became black without any signal for about 10 minutes, after that the computer rebooted in Catalina.
Now I only have the problem of BIOS, now the new motherboard has mounted F7, is it the case to upgrade to F8.

That's progress! It's not necessary to update BIOS to F8. My recommendation is (a) make a full bootable backup and then (b) use the system for a few days or weeks. When everything is stable and you feel comfortable updating the BIOS, then the choice is yours.

Hope you've all had a great start of the 2020!
I've ordered most of the components but have two questions. Any answers will be greatly appreciated:
•I'm looking to order the 970 Evo Plus NVMe M.2 2TB but read some mixed reviews on how it performs. has anyone managed to successfully get this to work on their systems?
•I need recommendations on cooling systems for the i7. The one used by CaseySJ seems great but fairly hard to source as I'm based in the UK. I'm using a 'ThermalTake Versa J23'. Do I need a dedicated CPU cooling system and if so any reasonably priced ones you'd recommend? Thermaltake website says this about the case: "the J23 can fit a tower CPU cooler with maximum height 160mm, and dual expansion slots for VGA up to 310mm in length, and a power supply with length of up to 170mm."
Sorry if this has been covered or if it's too simple for a post. I'm getting there.

I will do as advise, I will test the hackintosh for some days, after that I will try to update the bios.
I have three copy of the system, one made by timemachine, a bootable disk made with superduper, and an image of the disk made with superduper too.
I hope to be safe

I just purchased 2 EVO Pluses. I checked them in Windows for the latest firmware first (per these posts 2b2qexm7). I then fresh installed Windows on 1 and hackintosh on the other. In Win the drive read/writes ~3300/3000 respectively (using Samsung Magician)... in Hack it runs a bit slower. If I remember, Blackmagic showed just under 3000 for both. Either way, works great and they are speedy for sure.

Hi @CaseySJ (or any others with experience in this area). I'm considering having my home and OS folders on separate drives. I've read your instructions in Post #1 and the instructions from @Thaigyver. If I do this and then at some point I need to reinstall from scratch, I'd still need to reinstall applications right? Other than a smaller OS drive to clone back and forth, are there other advantages? I currently have my photos and music libraries on a separate drive and those are the largest folders so I'm already most of the way there. Just wondering what other advantages and disadvantages would come with putting the entire home folder on a separate drive. Many thanks!
