[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I followed the newest experimental guide, and after @CaseySJ helped me figure out the memory issue, haven't had any problems. Except one. if I leave my computer for more than 10 minutes it freezes. It will go to and wake from sleep (provided I am in the 10 minute window). Screensaver will turn on/off appropriately. But if I haven't done anything myself, the computer freezes at 10 minutes. I am not sure what to even look at, to get to where my problems might be coming from. I reverted to my bootable backup and didn't see the issue at first, but then after restarting into it a couple times the issue returns.

There are 2 memory drivers in the UEFI folder:
  • AptioMemoryFix
  • FwRuntimeServices
Memory drivers are mutually exclusive, meaning that only one is allowed at a time. Please remove AptioMemoryFix.efi and reboot.

If the sleep/wake/crash problem persists, please post your IOReg file (IORegistryExplorer --> File --> Save As...).

@CaseySJ, I went and grabbed another PSU RM850x as well as 2x16GB 2400MHz RAM sticks. But now I'm following same process as before. It gets to second reboot, and tells me macOS cannot be installed on machine?

I’m going to attempt to install Windows on the machine later tonight,. Where can I find what settings I would need to adjust to attempt the install?

I deleted the file, same issue as before. Attaching the reg file.

Hey all, hey @CaseySJ !

Did this build a few months ago and love it! I haven't had any issues until now, and this is a minor one that I want to see if you can help with.

I bought a USB 3.1 hub that has 3 USB A ports and an SD card reader. It's powered via the USB. The weird thing is that the card reader works fine, but none of the USB A ports! The hub connects with USB-C to the back of the computer. I've tried several different memory sticks and drives. I initially thought it was a power-delivery problem, but it also doesn't work when I try hard drives with DC/AC power, so I figure this has to be something else, right? The powered drive actually spins up and "reacts" as I plug it in, but nothing shows up on the desktop or in System Information.

Is there anything I can try to do to fix it?

I've attached a screenshot of my USB setup and my IOReg file. Screenshot is in Swedish, but I think you'll get it :) I'm on macOS 10.14.5.

This is the hub:

Thanks!!

That’s an easy one! USB 2 is disabled on all USB-C ports on this system in order to keep total number of ports at 15. Please try connecting a USB 3 device to the Type A ports on the hub. Only USB 3.x devices will connect.

Thanks for the speedy reply! All the devices I have tried I'm pretty sure are USB 3.x actually. Both sticks, SSD drives and powered hard drives.

Looks like I spoke too soon... cue the Homer Simpson "doh"!

IOReg shows that this device implements a 4-port USB 3 hub, where port 1 is a card reader. The other 3 ports are active, but nothing is connected to them.

Was this IOReg file saved while a USB 3 device was inserted into any of the three USB Type A ports? If not, please try attaching a USB 3 device and save/post the IOReg file again.

Please try an experiment by reducing memory speed to 2666MHz as follows:
  • BIOS Setup --> Keep X.M.P. Profile 1 enabled.
  • BIOS Setup --> Change System Memory Multiplier to 26.66.
Certain sleep issues such as ejecting disks during sleep are fixed by reducing memory speed. Whether this solves your problem remains to be seen, but it's worth a try.

Because the Catalina Mini-Guide has many tiny little devilish details, please print it out on paper (if you have not done so already) and follow it carefully. Mark each completed step with a pen or pencil. The devil is in the details. One wrong click or one missed keystroke can ruin the installation.

Installing Windows is easy. Download and run Microsoft's Media Creation Tool (simply Google for it). Then physically remove all macOS NVMe and SATA SSDs before starting the Windows installation. Also change BIOS --> Windows 8/10 Features --> Windows 8/10.

When Windows installation is completed, you may change BIOS --> Windows 8/10 Features back to Other OS.

I'm looking through the boot.log and not seeing any obvious culprits. If I only get kernel messages, it seems like there's a 40 second gap between kernel processing but in the one without the predicate looks like it's a bunch of application work.

I checked my "Login Items" and don't see anything obvious slowing things down, I did have some apps open like Chrome and Epic Game Store that may have taken some time to boot (but not 40 s?)

Any ideas on how to parse this file for culprits? I did see lots of Safari bugs.
There's a 17 second delay in the Kernel process (PID = 0). The relevant kernel log message seems to be:

kernel: ifnet_attach: Waiting for all kernel threads created for interface XHC0 to get scheduled at least once.

Please check all BIOS parameters again, particularly USB/XHC-related ones. BIOS settings are in Post #1.
