The new Mac Pro is total engineering prowess. Most PCs are in tin-can cases with components of wildly differing quality levels. An LED fan doesn't mean it is better than a dull, brown Noctua.

While it is true the price of Apple equipment is very high, I don't suppose they will sell that many Mac Pros compared to their more consumer-oriented devices. But those cast and machined cases take a lot of effort to produce. In particular the new aluminium bezel, that is CNC quality on another level. And whatever your take on the profit-margins, we exist in a free market. So does Apple. If people think the price is too high, they won't buy. Look at the automobile industry. Ferrari's built alongside Fiats on the same production-lines, but that doesn't mean the prices are the same.

:)

Sometime in December ?? I think we could have figured that out by now. Guess that rules out any special Black Friday pricing on one of these mega powerful Macs.

The Date is Confirmed by Apple. Just got this in an email. Finally after 6+ years the real Mac Pro is back !

Just seen this photo on Google. Does anyone think Jony Ive would have really designed a back-panel like this? It's remarkably undesigned. The cheesegrater pattern simply cut-through with the recess? Looks to me like he left before that part was finalised, or else he had a good design but someone later changed it.

Even modders of G5 cases make a better job of it.

My guess is that Jony sat down and drew up the basic outline of how he wanted to improve upon the old cheese grater. So the rounded handles, that don't cut into your hands, new design of the feet and casters and steel frame were probably all his ideas. Others probably took it from there and came up with the unique cooling via the 3D vents etc. At least no one will be looking at the backside all day long. Just like no MBP owner really ever sees the bottom of their Macbook Pro. Nothing to see there. The only I/O to interact with is the two TH3 ports and two USB 3 type A ports. People will likely plug in some kind of adapter to access those from the front. They won't be reaching around to the back to plug in flash drives or SD cards. With the type A USB ports at least, the connecting cables still only insert one way !

Unlike in 2013, the whole emphasis of this cMP "refresh" was function over form.

I've never seen such an elegant and simple way to access the complete interior of a case as this:

No thumb screws to lose. No glass panels that can scratch or break. No worry about any cable clutter or the side panel fitting properly. You could say that the inside of the MP looks even better than the outside. The polished, rounded stainless steel handles are the second best design feature of this case. Those that have to move these often will love them. Now if this runs as quiet and cool as Apple has claimed then this new MP will be a huge success even if it is considered over-priced based on the specs. I think that once Intel gets their 10 and 7nm process worked out the next few refreshes that may have PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 ram will be quite amazing in their speed and performance.

I still think the old El Capitan cases were the best. Just pull the lever and the entire thing was open.

Just configured the highest end new MP for use with FCP X and it's as expected, just over 53K for everything. Then add to that over $2900 in sales tax. Total cost would be 55K+. Not cheap by any means. If you can use one to make hundreds of thousands of dollars doing 3D animation graphics it's probably worth it.

At least Apple generously throws in a USB-C to lightning cable. Delivery starts in late January as expected too.
