[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I’m thinking about deleting all of the ports on the front of the case SS08, HS10, to reduce the number of ports down to below fifteen without running the risk of deleting needed connections for the wifi card and Titan Ridge. If I only have the ports on the back connected, this should be possible. I would then get a USB3 hub to plug into the back to reclaim the missing ports. Let me know what you think of this idea.
The USB ports on Titan Ridge do not actually count towards the 15-port limit! The Titan Ridge provides 4 logical ports:
  • Two USB 2.0 ports
  • Two USB 3.0 ports
Only the ports controlled by the on-board USB (XHC) controller are subject to the limit.

Just tried the updated files in mini guide and just get a bunch of verbose till it stops on service exited with abnormal code: 1 there is a lot more “coreAudioChannelIid” code in the verbose than normal. Still can’t get to the install GUI using the config and patches/drivers. Created the install usb from scratch too just to make sure it wasn’t the OS download. Or USB build that was an issue.
And if I try and use that config for the OS that I have partially installed that I can’t past the terms and conditions just gives me
Error loading kernel cache (0x7)
Boot failed: will sleep for 10 seconds before exit
Is this happening with RX 5700 XT installed? The Catalina Mini-Guide, unfortunately, won't work with RX 5700-series cards. Tried a few more experiments last night without success. Will continue to look into it.

Meanwhile, you may try with either RX 560 or iGPU. Once Catalina is installed, then it works with RX 5700 XT without problem. The only hurdle is to install the darn thing!

Hi guys, let me just add my experience.
I am running into this "Service exited with abnormal code: 1" error when I try to load the installer, I followed every single point of the mini guide for Catalina 10.15.1 (fresh install) with no luck. My Sapphire RX5700XT is connected to a Benq PD2700 through DP cable.
I'm pretty confident we will find a solution for this as the same GPU is working perfectly on a Ryzentosh with a Asus X570-E I built last week so... let's keep trying!
Greetings from Italy!
Ciao @heyelly

Unfortunately the Catalina Mini-Guide does not (yet) allow macOS to be installed via the RX 5700-series. It should be possible to perform the install with only the iGPU. I'll work on a revised set of files to do just that -- should be able to get this done before the weekend is over.

@CaseySJ I have to come back to you with another issue.

I had my "system" fully running and had 1 m.2 nvme ssd conneted for Catalina.
1 SSD and 2 HDDs by SATA.
Everything was recognized fine and was usable.

Now I've disconnected all drives, installed the second m.2 nvme in the second slot and then I've installed Windows10 on it. After that I've connected again all drives and in Windows I can see all my disks.

But when I boot now in Catalina I can just see the Catalina NVMe disk

What I've tried so far is to remove the Windows NVMe, but no success.
  • What is the format of the Windows disks? NTFS, exFAT?
  • Do the Windows disks appear on the left side panel of Disk Utility? (In Disk Utility, click View --> Show All Devices at the top left of the window -- not the menu bar).
    • You may post a screenshot.
  • Here's a sample screenshot:

Yay! That’s great but take your time, there’s no hurry :)

I started off by opening just Apple applications: Notes, iMessage and Calendar. All good. But then I got the freezes right away as soon that I opened the Apple TV app. Which makes me suspect that is related to my graphic card (GIGABYTE AORUS Radeon RX 580).

I will do some further testing. Thanks!
It should not be related to your GPU.
  • Please post a screenshot of Clover Configurator --> Boot with your config.plist loaded. This will show the boot arguments currently in effect.
  • Which SMBIOS are you using? iMac19,1?

@CaseySJ I'm currently not at home, but I have checked inside Disk Utily already with "Show all devices" and there is nothing inside.

It's strange that it's detected in Windows and not in Mac, before the Windows Install everything was fine.

I've tried also to put the ssd inside an external case and connect it with USB and it was recognized directly.

This might indicate an ACPI error. When you're back, please do the following:
  1. Run IORegistryExplorer and select File --> Save As... Then post that file.
  2. Post screenshots of:
    1. Clover Configurator --> Kernel and Kext Patches.
    2. Clover Configurator --> ACPI.

@WhosMac @SpikedBR @heyelly

I've just installed Catalina successfully using only the iGPU, as follows:

Phase 1:
  • Start with the USB install disk you created by following the Catalina Mini-Guide.
  • Connect it to your Mac.
  • Now, in the ZIP attached below there are two config.plist files:
    • config-Internal-GPU.plist
    • config-AMD-GPU.plist
  • We will perform the installation with the Internal file and then switch to the AMD-GPU file later.
  • Copy config-Internal-GPU.plist to the CLOVER folder of the USB install disk.
  • Open the file with Clover Configurator, go to SMBIOS section, and select iMac19,1 from the pop-up menu.
  • Save the file and then rename it to simply config.plist.
Phase 2:
  • Power down, flip power switch on PSU to OFF, then completely remove the RX 5700 XT GPU from the system.
    • Don't skip any one of these steps.
  • Connect HDMI cable to rear IO panel and to your monitor.
    • Don't use a TV. Use a computer monitor.
  • Power up the system and press Del to enter BIOS Setup.
    • Change Initial Display Output to IGFX.
    • Save and quit.
  • Press F12 at BIOS Splash Screen to open BIOS Boot Menu.
    • Select the USB install disk.
  • At the Clover Boot Menu, select the leftmost icon (the external USB disk).
  • Follow the on-screen progress.
  • When the installer starts, run Disk Utility and format the target disk as APFS, select the Scheme as GUID Partition Map, and give it the name Catalina
    • You must select View --> Show All Devices... and click on the parent name of your target macOS SSD. Then click Erase and you will see three options: Name, Format, and Scheme.
  • Then quit Disk Utility and select the option to Install macOS.
  • When the system reboots, make sure to press F12 at BIOS Splash Screen.
    • Select the USB install disk.
  • At the Clover Boot Menu, select Boot macOS Install from macOS Catalina
    • NOTE: We will NOT select the USB install disk in Clover Boot Menu any longer. We will still use the USB disk to boot the system because only the USB disk contains the EFI partition that allows computer to boot.
  • The macOS installer should automatically resume and take 15-30 minutes.
  • When it reboots, press F12 again and select the USB install disk.
  • At the Clover Boot Menu, select Boot macOS from macOS Catalina
    • Now you will be greeted with the Welcome screen.
    • Follow the wizard. You can login to iCloud or do it later.
  • When you're at the desktop, run Clover Configurator to Mount EFI partitions of both the USB install disk and the new Catalina SSD.
    • Copy the entire EFI Folder from EFI partition of USB disk to EFI partition of Catalina SSD.
  • Eject the USB install disk.
  • Reboot and see if Catalina starts up.
Phase 3: Prepare to install RX 5700 XT.
  • (Steps to be provided later.)
  • Do not do this yet.
  • Please report your progress with Phases 1 and 2.

Voodoo Science: For some reason System Information --> Graphics/Displays is showing 4K at 60Hz when connecting my Asus Designo 4K monitor to the on-board HDMI port. This port should not support 60Hz. I'll post screenshot later this evening if I can prove to myself that I wasn't hallucinating. Maybe it's a bug in 10.15.1, but the screen did not flicker when moving windows around as it does at 30Hz. Anyway, this could just be a mistake on my part. But if the 3 of you have 4K monitors, see if you also get 60Hz.
