[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

OK, here is where I stand. I made the new usb installer. Back to square 1. No devices inside machine except for the SSD. I attached a USB-C hub to the back with HDMI out on it. If the HDMI is connected to the hub or the motherboard I get a boot loop. I see all the information running and then it gets real fast and reboots to the Gigabyte logo. Any suggestions please and thanks for the help. Also, I used the hub to compensate for the fact I do not have a Thunderbolt to DisplayPort only the hub with HDMI out. Either way I got the same result from both...the reboot.
  • Double check all BIOS parameters. They are listed in Post #1 (settings for Catalina are the same as for Mojave).
  • Set Initial Display Output to IGFX because there's no discrete AMD GPU now.
  • Avoid the USB-C hub. It adds an extra layer of complexity.
  • To use HDMI port on motherboard, you must add the HDMI connector patch described in the spoiler.
Some additional questions/suggestions:
  • Please list the devices in your system:
    • Make/model of NVMe SSD(s)
    • Make/model of WiFi/BT card
    • Make/model of USB flash disk
    • Make/model of monitor
  • If there is no WiFi/BT card in the system, try removing the Devices --> Arbitrary entry corresponding to the Fenvi FV-T919 by opening config.plist in Clover Configurator.
  • Which version of firmware is installed? F6, F7, F8?
 
Hi,
I have a multiboot system (macOS Mojave / win10 / ubuntu18.04) on three separate SSDs based on the Gigabyte Z390 Designate motherboard and I have a problem with Ubuntu 18.04 shutdown: after turning off the system the fans and RGB LEDs remain on for a variable time between 2 minutes and even over an hour.
Has anyone had the same problem?
Some solutions found on the internet would suggest:
Enable ErP in Bios UEFI
Update the UEFI Bios to the latest version (F8)
Could they compromise the use of macOS Mojave on my system?

Both of those options are okay to experiment with, namely:
  • Enable ErP
    • Try this first with existing firmware
  • Update to F8
 
This wasn't a new CLOVER folder?? I know you're working with a bunch of people. I bet it gets confusing!
I might have some suggestions -
First remove ALL hard drives except desired Mac drive, ALL PCI devices except the graphics card, ALL RAM except one card left in slot #1, ALL USB devices except boot drive and keyboard/mouse, ALL USB header cables - we want a bare-bones system.

Carefully confirm all BIOS custom settings

Try the attached installer EFI. This is a little more bare-bones than your previous, but based completely on post #1 parameters. This is the EFI I used on my recent rebuild of my system.

If this still doesn't work, see if you can borrow a true 1920x1080 computer monitor just for the install.
If this DOES work, it's because you didn't follow post #1 carefully enough...
It's also advisable to update Clover on the USB install disk. UniBeast installs a relatively old version. We can download the latest from GitHub. Please see:
  • Step 1 --> Bullet #4 in this post for instructions on updating Clover.
  • Then compress and upload the CLOVER folder and we'll make some additional modifications.
 
Unfortunately it looks like the AORUS Xtreme does not have a DP-In port. Some comparisons from the AORUS Xtreme and Designare user's manuals:

Thank you :(..... Well. This is the day that I regret to buy the most expensive board instead of the designaire. I think this is a big fail from Gigabyte not allowing 5k resolution trough Thunderbolt on such expensive motherboard.

So I think the only way I can get 5k resolution is to connect the display port of my AMD Vega Nitro+ to the LG 34WK95U-W.

I will directly install the Catalina with your new mini guide.
I've already created the USB Stick with the command line and managed the step with Clover installation.

Next Step: Copy Clover Configurator. (In the main guide you said to copy much more programs. It's fine to just copy this one?)

Next Step: Copy the content of Catalina Fresh Install.zip: Can I follow the same files for my mainboard or should I use different files for the start?

Yes this is enough for now. Later (after macOS is fully installed) you may download other useful tools such as (a) Hackintool, (b) IORegistryExplorer, (c) Kext Utility. These are not used by the Catalina Mini-Guide.

You may safely copy all files that go into drivers/UEFI and all files that go into kexts/Other. But none of the SSDT files are applicable to your motherboard. This means you should use only USB 2.0 ports or a USB 2.0 flash disk because some or all of the USB 3.0 ports will not work.

Also, the config.plist defines a number of entries in Devices --> Arbitrary that may not apply (such as the Fenvi FV-T919 WiFi/BT card). You may still use that config.plist, but it may need to be modified.

Once Catalina is fully installed, you can follow this new and improved guide to customizing the USB ports called, appropriately, The New Beginning's Guide to USB Port Configuration.

Fortunately there are a handful of 5K monitors on the market that use DisplayPort 1.4. We can drive these monitors at 5K directly from the AMD GPU with a single DisplayPort 1.4 cable.

Just by curiosity... (because maybe I don't need this feature): Do you think if I connect the Display port to get the 5K video, that I could still in theory connect the Thunderbolt cable from my MB to the display, so that I could use for example USB ports or webcam from the monitor?

I have had ErP enabled since day one with NO problems.
ErP simply kills power to USB ports when the computer is off.

I prefer Enabled because; I have a USB/LED keyboard light I want to go off when shut down.
I want connected USB hard drives to stop spinning when shut down.

What is lost is the ability to power On from a USB device (keyboard).

Yes you can! If you connect the monitor via DisplayPort 1.4 then it's necessary to use a USB-A to USB-C cable (not a Thunderbolt cable) as shown on Page 10 of the LG owner's manual below. Connect the USB-A side to the computer and USB-C to the monitor. But make sure the cable supports USB 3 (not all of them do). Here's one that supports USB 3.
