Hi all

As a I was shopping for a MacBook a friend of mine showed me his ASUS ZenBook 14 UX410UA-GV410T. It probably has a different reference in the US than here in France because I couldn’t find it on Amazon.com.
It has exactly the specs I need and that I don’t find among the MacBooks:
  • RAM is expandable to 16 GB (some people say to 24).
  • It has an extra slot for a 2.5“ drive.
  • It has an SD card reader.
  • It’s rather affordable: €819.
  • It has excellent reviews.
  • Its few shortcomings are unimportant to me.

I never use WiFi (I keep my home in airport mode) so I don’t care if WiFi doesn’t work with Mac OS. For LAN purposes I could use something like a Cable Matters USB C Multiport Adapter (USB C Hub with DisplayPort 8K), 2X USB 2.0, Fast Ethernet or an equivalent.
It has no discreet GPU.
My monitor is a QHD so if I need to connect this laptop to it I would need to use the DP connection. There are USB-C to DP or I could use the adapter. Is there a chance it would work?

Is it reasonable to try to install Sierra or High Sierra on this laptop? Since I am not a nerd would it be a pain in the neck?
If I fail I could use it under Windows anyway.

TIA
Regards
Nick

100% you can run Sierra or High Sierra on this machine, you can use my guide for ZenBook UX430UA to follow through all the various steps. Yours will need some custom patches which you will see from my guide what I mean.

It took me total 3 weeks to hack my UX430 not knowing anything about how to do it, and learning here on TonyMacX86 and getting help from others. My Guide should help fast track your progress... good luck.

Thanks for the tip. I had not found your guide before. I just read it and I will follow it. Like you I am not very savvy in that field.
I've been using it under Windows so far. The hardware is pretty good. Yet the trackpad is a bit erratic.
I had not used Windows since XP and I find W10 even worse and unfriendly. The interface is very confusing.

Thanks I hope I'll find the time soon to do the job because I can't wait until I can use Mac OS.
Nick
PS
May I report a little typo in the first line of your guide which reads : "my late 2011 mpb is experiencing…". It should be "mbp" I guess. ;-)
