[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Notes post Catalina update:

- The Apple ID update to one account for everything is not sticking. I'm prompted or iCloud and Mac password the settings seem to take, and then shortly afterwards the UPDATE Account notice comes back. Reattempt and sticking for the moment.
- Catalina is not recognizing the Optical port that is my usual sound output.
- Apple Music took a few quits and restarts to recognize that I'm a subscriber.
- Quick Sidecar test device is detected and display comes up.
Is your system running the latest versions of Lilu, AppleALC, and WhateverGreen? Several changes were made in recent builds to support Catalina.

@CaseySJ

Did try the Catalina upgrade but now now I'm stuck with a "No Signal" state (after > 2 hours)... I do have the latest Lilu, AppleALC, and WhateverGreen and Clover. I'm running out of ideas ...

I did remove my RTX 2060 ...

EDIT: I was able to boot with my Mojave USB drive. Now everything works but my Intel HW acceleration is disabled (my RTX 2060 isn't installed) . How can I bring it back ?

SOLVED

Hello @MACAK,

I'm not sure I understand the question...
  • You can always install Mojave from scratch on a new disk or an existing disk, login to the Mac App Store, then perform an in-place upgrade to Catalina.
  • My experience with in-place upgrade is posted here.

That worked perfectly @CaseySJ !!!

Sure -- those boot arguments are fine, but the following can be removed:
  • -v
  • -no_compat_check
Thanks CaseySJ. Happy to report things seem to be back to normal. 2 days of many reboots, booting back and forth between my clone, no issues.

FYI I used AptioMemoryFix for about 2 months with no issues, it was only when I attempted to update to 10.14.6 when things went sideways... Just figured I'd add one more check in the column that despite the risks the developer warns about, OsxAptioFix2Drv-free2000 seems to be the most stable/predictable option for this build... Hopefully this changes in the future...

Anyway thank you again. This is one hell of a resource for people new to building a hac... I really can't thank you enough! Cheers.

Hi everyone,

I was following the Catalina guide, and wanted to change my SMBIOS to iMac 19,1 from Mac Mini, and also change to headless before making a backup of my system, and made a mistake somewhere. I was on 10.4.4, which I think matters? I can’t seem to boot my computer at all. Clover is giving me the below error. Somebody please help!! T_T thank you in advance!!

This is a standard kernel core dump. Alas it's all boilerplate stuff.

When I upgraded my Macmini8,1 system from Mojave to Catalina (or from Catalina 10.15 to Catalina Supplemental Update) I had these reboots:
  • First, we begin the Catalina installer from a fully booted macOS desktop.
    • The installer does some prep work.
    • Then the installer gracefully requests a Reboot.
    • This is Reboot #1.
  • Now at Clover Boot Menu we see a new Boot macOS Install from ...option.
    • We choose this option.
    • A few minutes later the installer's progress bar appears.
    • But before it begins to move, there is a sudden reboot.
    • This is Reboot #2. It is possible that the kernel core dump in your screenshot is coming from this step.
  • Now we're again at the Clover Boot Menu and we still see Boot macOS Install from ...
    • We again choose this option.
    • Now the installer takes its time and finishes the entire update.
    • At the end of this update there can be another reboot -- most likely a graceful one.
    • This is Reboot #3.
  • Now at the Clover Boot Menu the previous "Boot macOS Install" option is gone!
    • So we choose the normal "Boot macOS" option.
    • Some final installation or other prep work may occur, but after this the login prompt will appear.
    • There should not be another reboot.
How does your experience differ from this?
Hi CaseySJ,
I restored from backup working Mojave, everything is ready for upgrade. Follow this instruction carefully every single step, now I am able to reboot #3 which means no more “install”. After couple minutes restart, I hit “scary” black screen again. I think I have Clover v4957, not sure if this is a factor. I have all latest kexts inside L/E and Others. Please advise.

Attached is the modified USB SSDT that:
  • Disables HS10
  • Enables HS01
Because SS01 is already enabled, it is not necessary to disable both HS09 and HS10, so I disabled the bottom USB 2.0 port (HS10).

Please backup and remove the existing SSDT-UIAC-DESIGNARE-Z390-V7.aml from CLOVER/ACPI/patched and copy the new SSDT-UIAC-DESIGNARE-Z390-V7A.aml in its place. Reboot and check whether the Luna Display device connects.

Now my type-c port works now, and it does recognize the Luna Display device. Everything worked well until Luna display app on Hackintosh wouldn’t connect my iPad.. so sad

Hey guys, non-hackintosh question...

I was experimenting with my build, and I accidentally stripped a screw on one of the NVMe heat sinks. Such an idiot! I also cut one finger with a metal sticker. It was a bloodbath. lol The drive is fine and didn't break anything else, but does anyone know how can I get that screw out so I can replace it with a good one?

Cheers!

@CaseySJ

FINALLY took your advice...used your wonderful Mojave guide, made a new USB installer and installed a clean Mojave to a new ssd. I was very careful and it worked a treat. Mojave lives again. Upgraded Lilu, WEG etc. From there I downloaded the Catalina installer and ran it. It smoothly did everything it should. I now have a perfectly functioning Catalina...sound, blue-tooth, wifi, and sleep!
Now how do I proceed to get it to my Mojave NVMe. Clone it? There is that clone problem?
Then migrate from b-u?
Sounds dangerous.

Thanks again.
