[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

@xoyx CaseySJs setup is one of the smoothest running hackintoshes overall and is about as close as you can get to an original Mac with current hardware. Missing native nvram is not really a problem and does not impair usability. Nobody knows yet if Z490 will have working nvram or not.

This is a good summary. Based on other users' reports it seemed that macOS will not boot with iMacPro1,1 if iGPU is enabled, but your experience is quite the opposite. If IGPU does indeed work with iMacPro1,1 then by all means keep it enabled. I may have to reverse my earlier statements! :)
Another interesting thing is: If I leave iGPU disabled, then HEVC 8 bit encoding is done by the CPU only. Only if I enable it it’s done by my Vega as it should. The iGPU is shown in HWMonitorSMC2, but with Utilization on 0% always (which doesn’t surprise because of iMacPro1,1 SMBIOS).
It could still have to do with my EFI configuration – I didn’t use UniBeast/MultiBeast, I did a Vanilla install instead, so some things might be a bit different here.

Just wanted to follow up on this. This is a fair point to think of.

Actually, it is very much likely that the next chipset is going to have NVRAM issues. It is not that it'll stay permanent issue. It is just not a big focus by certain developers to make/find a solution for native NVRAM.

The last big NVRAM problem was with 100 and 200 series boards (Skylake and Kabylake). And Vit9696 worked on getting native NVRAM working. I don't think it is a big problem for these developers to go through it, but it might rather be time consuming to research it extensively.

It is just a matter of time. But I doubt there will be a new chipset over Z390, that won't have NVRAM issues. However, I might be wrong.

@CaseySJ would an MSI RX 580 Gaming X work with this build? Thinking about building this whole thing again for my work computer... Though, I can't find anything on this specific card. If not, I can just go with the Pulse one, I just currently own this MSI card so I might as well try and use it.

Hy!

Everybody use the same RAM what @CaseySJ used? G.Skill TridentZ?
I read the QVL list of the Z390 Designare. I want to buy Crucial RAM what are in the Buyer's guide, but i'm afraid because it has "just" 2400MHz.

If you use another modell or brand, please write to me :) Thank you!

I'm running Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 64GB (4x16GB) DDR4 3466. So far not a single bit of issues with this RAM, and I love the LED effects I get from it...

I'm running the G.Skill TridentZ 3000MHz 32GB successfully following this guide. Zero Issues.

Have you considered an outboard antenna such as this:

Thanks Casey, but the system already has a triple antenna and has been fine until I installed Catalina
I've deleted the bluetooth preference file and doing so clears the problem until I reboot, so I'm not sure what the problem is.
How long does your system take to boot up? Since installing Catalina mine takes way longer than Mojave

Referring to this one? See also my signature below each post. :)

Have you also tried resetting the Bluetooth module?

My startup times under Mojave and Catalina are about the same. Which part of the boot sequence is longer now?
  • Time from power-up to appearance of Gigabyte BIOS splash screen?
  • Time from Gigabyte splash screen to Clover Boot Menu?
  • Time from Clover Boot Menu to macOS Login window?

Hello @mrl4214,

Issue 1: Sleep fails to wake monitor after a few days
  • You won't like this answer, but the sleep/wake functionality on many Hackintoshes (especially Z390) is not reliable over long periods of time.
  • With NVMe hard drives, today's systems can boot up very quickly, so we recommend shutting them down every couple of days.
  • But let me open this question to everyone: Do you also experience sleep/wake failure after <N> attempts? Or sleep/wake works repeatedly and you've never seen a wake-failure?
Issue 2: System shuts down abruptly when running Heaven Unreal on Ultra.
  • Are you monitoring CPU and GPU temperatures during this time? Do those temps climb into the critical region?
  • Is your CPU cooler doing an effective job?
  • Do the blower fans on your GPU turn on? Is there enough space around the GPU fans for air flow?

Hey again,

Thanks for your answers, I went ahead and threw some info in my profile.

I think I screwed something up in my quest to fix these issues.

Issues currently:
1. Sleep now crashes the computer within the first or second sleep. The first time I test sleep it sometimes works and shuts off hardware and wakes up correctly. Sometimes I will sleep the computer and it will wake right back up to the login screen, where the login screen either works or hangs and won't respond to input.

2. It also has hung multiple times when just navigating around the interface without anything graphical (no chrome either).

3. I still have system resets on heaven ultra, but can't reproduce on windows so it must be something to do with power /heat management in software.

Steps taken:
* Double checked bios settings
* Updated Lilu, Whatevergreen, the other Apple one
---> Also tried installing/moving them in L/E as a hail mary
* Updated clover to 5xxx
* Moved files to the new drivers/uefi folder structure (see: questions)
* Updated bios
* Reset sleep files
* Tested memory (passed)
* Tested windows version of same benchmark and did not get a crash
* Windows sleep also works reliably.

Questions:
1. Do we have a current config.plist with all the check boxes marked correctly? We have the same hardware other then my RX VII. In your screenshots you have some lines for rules that are not discussed in the instructions

2. In regards to Lilu, Whatevergreen, etc should I be putting these in the clover EFI or L/E? (OR both? I ask only if these things were changed in Catalina)

3. When I upgraded clover it did not auto create the new drivers folder structure, and I think reset many of the files I installed to get my hackintosh to work. Should I not upgrade using clover configurator?

Next:
I will wait for the answers for the above, but after I plan to do a full reinstall of mojave with all the latest versions of everything. I do have a bootable backup but I never got the system to be stable and I think I may have messed something early on. I will make a bootable backup of mojave if I can get it stable, I will then upgrade to catalina, test, and if succesful make a final bootable backup of catalina.

Off topic:
I don't want this hardware to go to waste but if I can't get it to at least be reliable for two days I guess I will get a used trashcan mac pro or something. iMac pro would be nice but I don't want to have a display on the computer.
