Yes You can convert your Boot Partition to APFS using recovery Mode
Can you do this as part of the update process, or do you have to do it before upgrading? I am currently on High Sierra but the drive is HFS+
probably but Catalina will automatically convert it if I remember correctly. Trying to avoid APFS just adds more pain, I have 2 hacks both running APFS and its fine.Was your High Sierra already on APFS? Mine is on HFS+, so not sure if it will work.
