[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Well so now Catalina is officially released.. I'd like to start to get a picture of who has a working Sidecar setup and who doesn't. I, like some other folks, only see a black screen on my iPad (pro 3 12.9) when attempting to enable sidecar.

At first I assumed this was because I have my iGPU disabled is the UEFI (iMacPro1,1), however, as I understand this feature should work with real Macs that do not have iGPUs, so it might not be the iGPU after all.

At this point I'm excited to see if others on this thread with Designare boards see Sidecar working?

P.S. my Catalina update went extremely smooth, no issues, no, glitches, just a. straight upgrade using the inbuilt software update process.

I’m assuming for iMacPro and MacPro7,1 SMBIOS it uses the t2 chip so unless someone can emulate it for sidecar functionality I don’t think it’ll ever work :(

I also get black screen on wired and wireless using iMacPro (I’m on x299 so no igpu)

This weighed in heavily in my decision to emulate the 2019 iMac (iGPU / No T2) instead of iMacPro (No iGPU + T2). Since we dont have a T2 chip, I went the path with iGPU and no-T2. I have not updated yet, but will try later tonight.

Sorry for the translation.;) It's OK for the motherboard (CMOS) .I downloaded the link you gave me. I opened it on Mojave Hackintosh and there was more information to follow your tutorial correctly. Maybe the choice of Imac is not correct. Maybe it's me who is stressing:banghead: because bluetooth and wifi does not work:crazy:. I put the documents at your disposal.
Thank you very much.
Please make the following changes to your config.plist:
  1. Kernel and Kext Patches
    • Disable the USB port limit patch by checking on the item shown.

  2. Devices
    • Turn on Reset HDA

  3. SMBIOS
    • Use iMac19,1 (not iMac19,2)

I checked all the other drives' EFI partitions. I did find a MacOS folder with some files on one of the data disks EFIs (which should not contain any), so I removed that.
The only Windows folder is to be found on the Windows Boot disks EFI partition. This should not be removed, right?
Correct -- do not remove that.
Otherwise, Clover won't be able to boot. Just to be sure, I get you ...
So, what you are saying is, I should always boot windows from clover with the same bios settings? I tested it and it works fine! And this is preferable to booting directly from the Windows disk via BIOS?
Both ways of booting Windows are okay, but one method may provide better overall experience than the other. If you boot Windows from the F12 BIOS Boot Menu, then it's a clean boot without any interference from Clover.

Another thing I noticed: Sometimes, WIFI does not work after booting. Other times it just works. Is that because I didn't buy the FENVI option, but rather the second best?
I actually do not depend on WIFI, but I would like to fix that, if it is possible.
We've seen reports of a number of WiFi/BT problems with non-Fenvi cards/modules so the only such product I recommend for this particular motherboard is the Fenvi -- either the FV-T919 or the slightly cheaper FV-HB1200.

I think I pretty much got everything working, except for Monitors via Display Port.
I ran into this problem with one of the Catalina public betas, but the problem went away with a subsequent release -- or with the latest Lilu/WhateverGreen. I would suggest:
  1. Perform a full bootable backup.
  2. Then update Lilu, WhateverGreen, and AppleALC first. Don't forget to run Kext Utility to rebuild the kernel cache after copying these files into /L/E.
  3. If you're running VirtualSMC instead of FakeSMC, then update that as well. Remember to update VirtualSmc.efi in the CLOVER/drivers64UEFI folder (for Clover 4xxx) or in the CLOVER/drivers/UEFI folder (Clover 5xxx).
  4. If you're running a version of Clover older than 4961, upgrade to 4961 by downloading this file. If you're comfortable to upgrade to Clover 5xxx and moving EFI files from drivers64UEFI to drivers/UEFI, then by all means upgrade to Clover 5xxx.
    • But do Steps 1, 2, 3 first and if the DisplayPort problem remains, then do #4.
Is there a way to check, if everything is fine? Something like a list to work though? You obviously would need to add special components of your own system, like my USB3 audio interface ... but just for the basic installation?
There is a post-install verification checklist in the spoiler labeled State of the System AFTER Post-Installation in Post #1.

Oh no, this might mean we need firmware (BIOS) support for Sidecar. Will run some tests during the week.

Well just updated a cloned disk of my mojave disk to Catalina. Everything went ok without problems during update. And sidecar is working fine! Just like in my Macbook Pro.

What is not working for me is sound. I can only get sound from HDMI. Also maybe i did something wrong with clover boot, because i can't start automatically the disks when computer is retarting at clover menu, I have to select them manually.

Also because I updated a cloned disk of my Mojave disk, after update to Catalina could not find clover at EFI partition of Catalina. So I copied EFI folder from the Mojave partition to the Catalina partition.

Everything seems to be ok apart from the sound.

Update: after updating Lilu, WhateverGreen and AppleALC, sound is working Fine! Just need to solve the boot automatically from Catalina!

Hello @CaseySJ
Thanks for the great guide! I have just followed along and everything is working smoothly except under PCI there is no devices? This has me perplexed. Is there any obvious place I could have messed up on? Thanks in advance.

Thanks! Just one more question: would you recommend that for my system as well? I do audio stuff. I might here and there cut some videos with final cut in the future, but that is only a side aspect. Is AptioMemoryFix recommendable over free2000? And why is it relevant to disable the iGPU? Doesn't the AMD card take over that task as well if you don't disable the iGPU? I just couldn't find information on the why ...

One would think the system would handle that, but benchmarks and video editors have gotten better performance out of disabling the iGPU.

I used AptioMemoryFix because the developer of free2000 says it can brick your hardware. You have to disable the iGPU to get AptioMemoryFix working, and depending on PCI devices, you may be stuck with free2000 no matter what.

I haven't run into any downsides when I swapped other than the fact I had to relicense software and sign back into iCloud/iMessage due to different serial numbers in SMBIOS.

I only switched though because I wanted to use AptioMemoryFix, as I don't do video/audio editing or anything where the GPU difference would matter. I'd probably switch back to iMac19,1 if it didn't break Quick Look with iGPU off (I think there are additional kexts that can fix this but the less modifications needed the better as far as I'm concerned).

Happens to me too. Delete EMUVARIABLE, restart, add it back and restart.
The second restart will cause a kernel panic as the system tries to write to NVRAM and cannot find it. After that it'll be OK.

Ive had a thought about Sidecar. For those that haven't had luck making it work, what's your Wifi and BT card? Is it possible the limitation is related to wireless connectivity challenges? For example, isn't the Fenvi based on a native Broadcom chip that is rather old in the Mac ecosystem?
