[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Hmm so w/o THB_C header it may not work at all? That concerns me is the controller comes from America to Greece and will take a long time to send it back and order the titan ridge controller. I found a few posts in the forum from ppl who have bought this monitor but w/o luck at full 5k designare through tb3. The 2x dp inputs are a must for this monitor to work properly w/o the need to lower the resolution. But as you suggest with DisplayPort 1.4 from rx580 directly to the monitor it may work. There is a post also that confirms it if I have understand correctly.... and then why all this hype i have found from other posts that it doesn't work through tb3? If it really works with a DisplayPort 1.4 at full res and at 60hz then everything is fine and we left with 2x tb3 ports to connect anything we like.

From the other hand I found this thread (post #5) that says with DisplayPort directly to the monitor it only works at 30hz. Then at windows it works at 60hz! Strange...

My mind has stuck with this monitor and I can't find any other for video work with at least 4k res, dci-p3 (it covers 98% measured form reviews) and also ultrawide. LG has made these monitors 34KW95U and Ultrafine editions mainly for macs and professional work. Also these monitors provide also good calibration softwares for macOS.
Because the GC-Alpine Ridge is coming from the US instead of a retailer within the EU, I would suggest:
  • Cancel the GC-Alpine Ridge order from Amazon USA.
  • Wait for LG monitor to arrive.
  • Connect it via DisplayPort 1.4 cable and check resolution and refresh rate. Is it operating at full 60Hz at 5K by 2K?
  • Connect it via on-board Thunderbolt 3 port with or without using the on-board DP-In port. What resolution and refresh rate are you getting?
Based on this we can determine whether it's necessary to try either an Alpine Ridge or Titan Ridge add-in-card.

That is what I will do Casey. Thx for the suggestion, I really appreciate your help! I'll update when I will receive the monitor then. :)

P.S. You saved me be4 from a nightmare and Im sure you will do your magic again! :headbang:

@CaseySJ I have followed every step on your guide and manage to sucess on a i7 8700 and Z390 designare / 16gb ddr4 / RX 580 saphire pulse

I can confirm that using the Apple dongle TB3>TB2 works (using a Lacie 2big 12TB in raid + Lacie 4TB Tb2 connected on its back) and everthing shows up as in the screenshot. (hot plug works aswell) View attachment 392485

Hi there. I have a 5big, and a couple of things.

First, hot plug did not work, I had to reboot in order to get it to show up anywhere on the system.

Second, its not fully loading. Did you have to install the LaCie SW? I don't think I had to do this with my iMac, and I have been reluctant to do so on the Hackintosh. However, since its not working, that might be my next step.

Third, I notice yours says AHCI controller, nowhere do I get that. Perhaps my TB or AHCI settings are messed up?

I do see it show up in PCI, but not loading a driver.

I actually render the same project on a Mac Pro 2013 and it render out without problem. I'm not sure whether is the CPU, GPU or any settings that I've missed that is giving the problem.

Not sure upgrading to 10.14.6 will make any differences. I'm on 10.14.5 now.

You might want to look at the set up Resolve (this article discusses some settings and hardware issues, with some testing here).

Some people have reported many bugs Resolve had with various hardware. The latest Resolve updates should have sorted that out (you downloaded the latest version?).

The iGPU should be inactivated, as CaseySJ indicated, as an active iGPU can make Resolve less stable.

The 475% CPU usage you report is a little bothersome. It should be more like 80 to 95% during max use. I may have missed it, but are you over-clocking? If so, perhaps lower the settings. (If at 5 GHz, maybe try 4.3 or 4.5 GHz.) And, have you set the AVX in BIOS to something like 3, rather than leaving at Auto? That might help.

In looking at the DaVinci spec requirements (here), you should be fine. In the preferences section, you can specify how much RAM is used by Revolve. I've also heard that selecting DNxHR SQ in the optimized media preferences section may help reduce CPU overhead (but at a cost rendering time and storage space).

Are you over-clocking the RAM? I've seen stability improvements by decreasing the DDR4 speed, in 200MHz steps, from the maximum rated speed. The overall loss in computer speed by the reduction is trivial vs the potential for improved stability.

Another source for Resolve crashes in inadequate file permission. Maybe give Resolve full access permission in System Preferences/Security & Privacy/Privacy/Accessibility section. And also check the permissions of the folder where files are being read and written to: highlight folder and right click for "Get Info". Then, at bottom of this window, allow "Read & Write" for all users.

I use a LG 79 43-inch 4k monitor with Cubase Pro @ approx 90 cm since yesterday, and a comparable Philips 43-inch before that for 2 years. Works well for me. I can have the arrange page on top and the mixer at the bottom and work without zooming all the time.

It's just behind my near field speakers, otherwise it's an acoustic obstruction that will seriously distort your sound.

A word of warning:
Lots of people don't like it, because you need to move your head a bit. It's that big. And If you wear bifocal glasses(I do), it may not be ideal.

Also, make sure the monitor is not too high up, this will stress your neck and cause headaches.

Which gets me thinking.. If slate raven was 4k.. Or Apple would just allow touch.

Cubase user here, and now trying Logic for certain features.

I guess this is a bit off topic! But I don't have 75 posts to PM.

OK gang... I need help before I jump off a tall building.
My machine has been running flawlessly until last night. I had an issue where the Network section of the finder just vanished.
I attempted to log out to see if that would fix it but immediately the machine died and will NOT come back. I have tried switching to my backup drive (for boot and efi) but it does the same thing. Apparently throwing a kernel panic.
I have tried booting from my original install key which does work and allows me to boot from the backup drive but... I can not boot from the USB (only use it's EFI) which means I can't try a re-install on my main drive.
I'm at my wits end so any ideas or help would really be appreciated.

Please try the following, one at a time.
  • Reset CMOS by turning off the system and shorting the two designated pins on motherboard with a flat-head screwdriver. Please refer to Designare User's Manual if unsure.
    • If this solves the problem, STOP.
  • Re-flash the F6 BIOS and set BIOS parameters once again, starting with Save & Exit --> Load Optimized Defaults.

Thanks Casey, I’ll report back after I try

thank you very much for you help. really appreciate. Wonderful community!

On my Machine,
- No OC on CPU
- No OC on the Ram
- iGPU is disabled
I will have to check the AVX in Bios and file permission as you suggested. I believe my AVX is on Auto.
Thanks for linking the Davinci Resolve article.

Thankfully I still have the Mac Pro 2013 in the studio so I was able to render out the job for the client. I'm on a 3 weeks break and will try out your suggestion once I'm back in the studio. Thanks again!

I have a strange problem that I cannot figure out. I see that you are using a NVMe card for your macOS and apps, and have split your Home folder onto a separate drive. I'm trying to do this however I started with a SATA SSD, and now I've gone out a purchased a Samsung EVO 970. So I've kinda doing it the other way round. I've cloned my current system drive to the new EVO 970, and can boot off it just fine if I tell it to in the Clover boot loader screen, but I cannot select the EVO 970 in the BIOS as my #1 Boot Disc Option, so that it boots from this every time automatically. Only my old drive and another one I have connected are showing as options...
