[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

Just checked, it survives a cold boot. Woohoo! I don't know what made it start working since my first post, but it's still going. I had Thunderbolt enabled in the BIOS, but just tried disabling it and the AIC still works. I've also confirmed the USB ports on the back of the LG Ultrafine work as well as the camera, brightness controls, and sound. Neat!

If I find out what the magic sauce is exactly, I'll update this post. For now it seems to be using the AIC in the middle slot (which puts slot one into 8x mode). The build in controller can be enabled or disabled, no difference.
This is really good -- and unexpected.

Should I look into updating the thunderbolt SSDT to better support this card and it's ports?
The answer to this is easy: No!

The advice from @jhahn is correct. EmuVariableUefi is necessary to enable Messages and FaceTime, both of which must be able to store key parameters in NVRAM. Without EmuVariableUefi, there is no access to NVRAM. EmuVariableUefi also allows CLOVER to remember the last booted volume; it also allows macOS updates to auto-select the correct intermediate boot volume during an OS update. EmuVariableUefi has also been a factor in getting Shutdown and Restart to work properly.

Edit: If using AptioMemoryFix instead of OsxAptioFix2Drv-free2000, EmuVariableUefi is generally not needed.

I am using OsxAptioFix3Drv, they have the same core with AptioMemoryFix so I read EmuVariableUefi is not needed, but I'll try to add it to see if it fixes the shutdown. So far everything is working perfectly now, no black screen crashes during the whole day. I have Messages and Facetime working well. If I only have error when shutdown it's not a big deal... Thanks for your time I really appreciated, you should add a bitcoin address in your signature to receive tips ! Flashing the BIOS did the job apparently. If I want to install Catalina Beta I can do it directly from the Mac Update, it's working ?

When I updated to the beta, I was able to do it through the normal method. After the first reboot, make sure to choose the partition “Boot macOS Install from XXXX” where XXXX is your boot volume name. Also, do a backup first.

Edit: spelling.

Glad to hear the build itself went well. Those GeekBench 5 numbers are, however, far too low.
  • Is spotlight indexing taking place?
  • Is there any other process consuming large amounts of CPU? (This can be checked from “Activity Monitor”.)
  • Have you tried GeekBench 4 instead?
Because of 2400MHz memory you’ll get a little slower result, but this result is significantly low. So the first course of action is to check whether the CPU is busy with other tasks.

  • When I click on the spotlight tool in the upper right corner I don't see a progress bar saying that Mojave is indexing anything, is there any other way to tell?
  • I checked with activity monitor and it was less than 4% CPU usage when I ran the Geekbench test.
  • I don't see where I can get Geek Bench 4; I purchased Geek Bench 5 from their website.
I would be fine with the multi core score breaking the mid 10,000's but alas no success. I'm a little unclear on what could still be affecting the performance; I have noticed that when I try to boot the machine with my main monitor connected to the DVI port and my Vizio 4K tv connected to the HDMI port on the GPU i get a kernel panic or no boot, but other than that no issues.

Thanks again!

Looks like your system is perfectly fine! Here are my Geekbench 5 scores:

I'll add these to the build guide because Geekbench 4 and Geekbench 5 scores are not cross-compatible.

Edit:
Benchmark section updated as follows:

Yes, an in-place update to Catalina is expected to work. And yes, we must do a full backup first -- this is the only "undo" option we have for an OS update.

*** In Preparation for Tomorrow's Official Release Announcement of macOS 10.15 Catalina ***

Please see this post for some early experience with an in-place update from Mojave to Catalina. We expect the actual release to occur this Friday, September 13 or thereabouts.

Edit: Looks like we may need to wait for the October event instead!!

I tried OsxAptioFix3Drv today instead of OsxAptioFix2Drv-free2000. I didn't remove EmuVariableUefi. I didn't work for me:

So reverted back to OsxAptioFix2Drv-free2000. (Clover 5058)

Here is my Clover folder attached so you can try maybe. Thanks @CaseyJS, EmuVariableUefi.efi did fix the shutdown kernal panic !

Actually, I did all the update of Lilu WeG AppleALC, I'm using iMacPro 1,1, I removed the "shikigva=32 shiki-id=Mac-7BA5B2D9E42DDD94" boot argument, and I added the EmuVariableUefi.efi file to the /Clover/Drivers/UEFI/ folder along with OsxAptioFix3Drv.efi file and everything is now working on my hackintosh. No problem during booting, even the pink line are gone, no kernel panic during rebooting (the EmuVariableUefi.efi did fix the problem as my Nvram was not properly handled, I can see now a nvram.plist file created in the EFI volume). I have quickview working, iMessage, facetime, audio

The only remaining issue I would say is trouble to comes out of sleep mode sometimes and I need to restart the computer.

I also added the /Library/Extensions folder so you can hand pick the kext you need (I updated Lilu, Apple ALC, WeG and IntelMausi, not sure about the last one ^^)

Tell me how it works for you !

Generally we don't encounter problems with shutdown and restart. If you see the comments in this thread about build experiences and issues encountered, you will find that shutdown and restart are very rare.

So this means we might be overlooking something simple...
  • If you boot from the USB Install Disk and then select Boot macOS from Mojave at the Clover Boot Menu, does shutdown and restart work?
  • It might still be a good idea to perform a CMOS Reset as described in the Designare user's manual. Simply use a flat-head screwdriver to short the 2 designated pins.
Also feel free to do the following one more time (so we have the very latest):
  • Compress and upload CLOVER folder from EFI partition of Mojave SSD. You may remove serial numbers from SMBIOS.
  • Screenshot of /Library/Extensions folder.

Thank you, without you. I cannot reach this far :D
  • "If you boot from the USB Install Disk and then select Boot macOS from Mojave at the Clover Boot Menu, does shutdown and restart work?"
-> The shutdown/ restart is still not working in this case, I search around and have the thought that it may come from the PSU. Let's me borrow one PSU, and have a check.
  • "It might still be a good idea to perform a CMOS Reset as described in the Designare user's manual. Simply use a flat-head screwdriver to short the 2 designated pins."
-> Yes, I did follow your advice, and restart the bios. We got no improvement :D

Attachment is my EFI, and /Library/Extensions folder.

Btw, there is a problem with my sound/audio. The sound is lag, and very cracky. Can I have your advice also?
