Have a new issue. After rebooting the machine, to get bluetooth to work again and pair with my Magic Mouse I have to manually unplug and replug the dongle for it to work correctly. It's a IOGear Bluetooth 4.0 Adapter, been using it for a while with no issues previously.

Have tried removing the mouse manually from the list of bt devices (the only one anyway), reconnecting etc, but this issue still occurs on reboot. This isn't an issue with Sleep.

Hi there.

Three questions:

1) Which version of macOS ?

2) What configuration work have you done on your USB ports?

3) Got to be something that has changed if all was working fine prior to a specific reboot.

Next time it occurs, before you unplug the BT adapter, run IORegistryExplorer and head down to the XHC part of the tree to see if you can spot the IOGear.

Also check Sytem Report for the bluetooth device and if it's there (it may not be) check the power draw.

:)

10.14.6

Done the USB Port limit patch as of this post (10.14.6):

Tried IORegistryExplorer like you suggested, don't see any reference to IOGear.

Attached the screen grab of the bluetooth system report (after reboot, when it was still plugged in but mouse not working).

The strange thing is the bluetooth preferences pane says it's connected to the mouse, but the battery icon looks like it's empty - but the batteries are fine (tried with different ones to be sure). Once I do the unplug/replug thing, battery levels are correctly displayed and functions normally.

Yep, certainly looks like the bluetooth is working and paired with your mouse there.

The battery level meter implies a communication problem. Not possible to spot what/where with the info so far, I'm sorry. If absolutely zero changed from one moment to the next and the BT-link stopped working, well that could be a partial failure of the USB adapter, for example.

Have you tested with Windows? If it's working as expected there, then it is probably a problem with macOS and it's USB set-up.

Never really found a quick fix for this, so I performed a fresh install of Mojave. That seems to have done it, no issues for now.

Spoke too soon. Had to reboot, issue is back. Argh.

For what it's worth, I previously was using this same USB bluetooth adapter and it regularly dropped connectivity (2 - 5 times a week). It was happening when using USB port limit patch and also after creating a custom SSDT for USBInjectAll.kext. After recently switching to a Fenvi HB1200 WiFi/BT card for $35 USD, there has not been a single BT disconnect for my Magic Mouse. Continuity, Handoff, Airdrop, etc. all working perfectly now, too. Although it's more rewarding to diagnose and fix the underlying problem, you might want to consider the Fenvi card with native functionality to save some headaches at a relatively low cost.

Funnily enough, I've been looking at exactly this Fenvi solution. I'm in the UK, am tempted with this

I see this thread is listed as ‘Solved’, it isn’t.

'Solution' I found was to change motherboard! Gone the Gigabyte H110M-S2H, hello Asus z170 Pro Gaming. Zero issues now, after reboots, bluetooth connects fine consistently.

So while it's not strictly a solution, it is for me. Heh.
