Hey all,

Finally came into some funds to upgrade my 3 1/2 - 4 year old hackintosh. In that is an i7 4790K, a CoolerMaster MasterLiquid LC120e AIO Cooler, a Gigabyte H87 Micro ATX mobo, Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) 1600mhz & White Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB (2x8GB) 1866mhz RAM for 32GB total, a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5" SATA boot SSD, & a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 960 Windforce 2GB GPU running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5.

My upgrades I'm currently putting together are a Gigabyte Z390 M Gaming Micro ATX mobo, an Intel i5 8600K, White Corsair Vengeance RGB 32GB (2x16GB) 3200mhz RAM, and a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB PCIe NVME M.2 SSD and I'm keeping the same GPU for now, debating on grabbing an RX 470/480 or 570/580 on eBay or something.

Will these upgrade components that I currently have work in installing either OS X El Capitan, Sierra, or High Sierra (10.11.5, 10.12.5, & 10.13.5 respectively) with the GTX 960 I currently have and if so any link recommendations would be greatly appreciated! If it won't work with the 960, out of those 4 RX Radeon cards, RX 470, 480, 570, or 580 would anybody confidently recommend I grab on eBay or something for the most easiest compatible upgrade from Yosemite to one of those 3 OS's. Thanks for taking the time to read this insanely long post, lol, and thanks in advance for any advice and help! This system is currently being used as my daily driver for Post production audio for film and TV work like recording and editing dialogue, ADR, Foley & SFX, etc. in Pro Tools. Looking forward to seeing your responses and opinions/advice! Happy Hackintoshing!

The latest versions of El Capitan / Sierra / High Sierra are 10.11.6 / 10.12.6 / 10.13.6 respectively. Do you have a reason to stay on the .5 versions?

The GTX 960 should be compatible with El Capitan / Sierra / High Sierra with the corresponding Nvidia web drivers. But it won't work with Mojave and later due to the lack of Nvidia web drivers.

Your upgrade build together with the GTX 960 will be supported only with MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6. If you want to run Mojave or later you will have to replace the graphics card with a RX 570 / RX 580, or just remove the card and use the CPU integrated graphics in the 8600K.

Thank you very much for the advice. And no there wasn't any real reason I was sticking with the .5 version of Yosemite other than I was ecstatic that I got a stable consistent performing software build and didn't know that much about upgrading OS's on hackintoshes, and didn't want to mess anything up that I didn't know how to fix lol. Also I didn't even know there was a .6 because I didn't see that download in the app store. Any link recommendations for the install process besides what's here on this site or so you know anything specific regarding any other kexts or drivers I have to download for my NVME SSD versus the SATA ones? Will go through everything and attempt the install/upgrade when I get out of work. Thank you again!

NVMe SSDs are only natively supported on MacOS High Sierra or later. So you will have to use High Sierra if you want to stay with the GTX 960.

Check the High Sierra Installation Guide (10.13 Installation under Guides) at the top of this site. You need a Mac or working hackintosh to download High Sierra and make a Unibeast USB stick for use on your new system.

Thanks for the heads up! Just got out of work and on my way home. Will update this thread with good or bad news after I keep going on the upgrade! Thanks again!

Update so I tinkered with it over the weekend and was able to get into A Installer but it was the one like it uses when you boot into MACOS Recovery mode install of the fresh first time installer like I've done many times before. Did a 5-7 minute progress bar restarted and I booted into the target drive and it started to show a full on installer progress bar like I'm used to buy the second it shows the very first sign of it starting with the blue bar there it reboots itself and goes back to my clover usb. Not very familiar with installing using clover and am more familiar with the chameleon/chimera install method. Any tips or advice?
