I've done no modification to the system for a long time. No changes to bios, no changes to the OS (haven't done any updates because there's some issue).

Just a couple of days ago, sleep suddenly stopped working. Now if I invoke sleep manually, the computer will act just like it does when caffeinate is running, the display sleeps, but not the machine.

Has anyone experienced this sudden onset of insomnia ?

Anyone know ? Is there an app besides caffeinate that can stop the machine falling asleep ?

To be clear, the display will still sleep, but the machine will not power down anymore

pmset -g live did not show anything preventing the machine from sleep. Nor does Activity Monitor in the "preventing sleep" column.

I'm not able to boot in safe mode, so I can't use that to check if anything else is interfering.

[~]$ pmset -g live
System-wide power settings:
Currently in use:
standby 1
Sleep On Power Button 1
womp 0
hibernatefile /var/vm/sleepimage
proximitywake 1
powernap 1
networkoversleep 0
disksleep 10
standbydelayhigh 86400
sleep 30
autopoweroffdelay 28800
hibernatemode 0
autopoweroff 1
ttyskeepawake 1
displaysleep 10
tcpkeepalive 1
highstandbythreshold 50
standbydelaylow 86400

I tried setting hibernatemode to 3 as I read somewhere (and rebooted), but that failed too so I set it back.

pmset -g assertions

Should show what is preventing sleep

pmset -g assertions

Should show what is preventing sleep

Thank you! I don't know how to read the output. Can you see what's (if anything) causing the issue?

Idle sleep preventers: IODisplayWrangler

After some search on the IODisplayWrangler, it seemed that wasn't the issue. However, I found others had had this sudden problem and fixed it by resetting the printer. I reset the printer following these steps: https://www.imore.com/how-reset-printing-system-your-mac

and now it works again without issues

Glad it's working. If you get further issues, if you havent already, check your USB power properties are implemented correctly, guide here: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/...tion-for-sierra-and-later.222266/post-1728645

Since this is happening again, I'm listing the steps here just in case.

How to reset the printing system on your Mac
  1. Click on the Apple menu icon.
  2. Click on System Preferences.
Click on the Apple icon, then click System Preferences
  3. Click Printers & Scanners.
  4. Right or control-click in the list of devices on the left side of the window.
  5. Click on Reset printing system....
Click on Printers and Scanners, then right or control-click on your printer
  6. Click Reset when prompted to confirm that you want to reset your entire printing system.
  7. Enter the password for your administrative account if prompted.
  8. Click OK.

When the reset process is complete, the list of printers and scanners will be empty. You'll then want to re-add your printer.
