[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I think I've finally figured out what has been making my system hang from time to time. I am able to repeatedly without fail make my computer lock up by opening a bunch of tabs in chrome which lead me to believe it was related to RAM.

Videos of lock up:

Next step was to see which stick of RAM was the culprit. For reference I have the Corsair LPX 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz C16 DDR4. I loaded my ram in different configurations then tried to make my computer crash by opening a bunch of chrome tabs and running Rember/Memtest. We'll call each stick RAM 1 and RAM 2 and use the slot names from the chart below. Tests were performed with no peripherals attached via USB / thunderbolt except for mouse and keyboard. Results from my tests:

A2: RAM 1, B2: RAM 2: Crash
A1: RAM 1, B1: RAM 2: Crash
A2: RAM 1: Passed
A2: RAM 2: Passed
B1: RAM 1: Passed
B2: RAM 2: Passed
A1: RAM 1, B1: RAM 2: Rember (Memtest GUI) failed in SafeMode
B1: RAM 2: Rember (Memtest GUI) passed in SafeMode

So from these tests I believe that I have confirmed that the individual sticks of RAM are fine. The individual DDR4 slots are fine. The problem lies with how my computer / MOBO is handling two channels of RAM. I guess I could run a few more rember configurations but it was so time consuming. I'm not sure why these RAM issues are resurfacing since I have already replaced my RAM and memtest passed before I started noticing frequent lock ups.

Anyone have any suggestions what my next step should be? Am I missing anything to optimize the dual channel configuration? Should I try to get a replacement Motherboard? Unfortunately my return period from Amazon has passed so it would have to be through Gigabyte.

If you would like me to check your CLOVER configuration, please do this:
  • Compress and upload the CLOVER folder from EFI partition of Mojave SSD. You may remove serial numbers from SMBIOS section (but save those numbers).
  • Upload a screenshot of the /Library/Extensions folder.
And a couple of questions:
  • What is the make and model of your display monitor?
  • Are you using DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI? Any video adapters or straight HDMI-to-HDMI or DP-to-DP or DVI-to-DVI cable?

-I'm using 2 monitors (ASUS ROG PG279Q and ASUS PG278QR)
-Both monitors going straight to GPU (2x Displayport to Displayport), no adapters.

Have you seen this post from a handful of days ago? The problem with Chrome that's affecting Final Cut Pro may be affecting other video-based tasks including streaming in a web browser...

Does your system crash if you use Safari with multiple tabs or FireFox?

By the way, those are a lot of tabs. Does the computer crash only under this (somewhat usual) case?

Regarding the animation problems you reported (no magnification in Dock, no menu bar highlighting, no tooltips):
  • Have you already checked that "magnification" is enabled in the Dock preferences page?
  • For tooltips and menu bar highlights, have you used a utility such as the old "Secrets" app that can perform deep customization? Or perhaps you used a command like this: defaults write -g NSInitialToolTipDelay -int 10000 (This will increase the delay to 10 seconds before a tooltip appears.)
Was this a fresh installation of Mojave? Or perhaps a hard drive from another Hackintosh was moved/cloned to this hardware?
Several suggestions regarding Bluetooth:
  • Try reorienting the Bluetooth antenna. If you have 3 or 4 antennas on the back of the PCIe card, which one belongs to Bluetooth? Fortunately, each antenna is labeled on the PCIe card itself. Bluetooth is usually the 3rd from the top, but it's best to read the labels.
  • Also try disconnecting the Bluetooth antenna and attaching the antenna that came with the Designare motherboard. That's a single relocatable antenna with 2 connectors. Just use either one of the connectors and move the antenna around until you get a stable signal.
Thanks. I don't see the labels for the antennas. What do you mean by 3rd from the top as the card sits horizontally

I have a problem with that card also -- try holding down 'Alt' when you look at Bluetooth preferences. If your Bluetooth signal strength is < -80, then it's probably a bad card (Mine is bad.) I think the quality control on those are pretty horrible (read the amazon reviews) -- I've purchased the Fenvi T919 card which seems much more reliable (and should arrive today...)
I hold Alt where in Bluetooth preferences?

I made a handful of changes to config.plist:
  • ACPI --> PluginType --> Enabled
  • Graphics --> Inject Intel --> Disabled
  • SMBIOS --> Trust --> Enabled
The only one that might have an impact (no guarantees) is item #2. Because iMacPro 1,1 cannot use IGPU (Intel Xeon CPU in iMac Pro does not have built-in IGPU), we cannot use "Inject Intel".

Yes I can confirm that it crashes doing the same thing on Safari.

Unfortunately not the case. It does hang up at seemingly random times. I just stumbled upon this way to consistently make it crash.

The weird thing is that I can open seemingly unlimited tabs with only 1 stick of RAM installed in any slot. The problem happens when I have BOTH sticks of RAM installed. Also Memtest confirms this finding as well. Test passes with 1 stick, crashes right away with 2 sticks.

Understood. Very good localization of the problem.

As I recall, you initially received a bad DIMM and had it replaced. Have you always used Corsair LPX 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz C16 DDR4?

Do you happen to have another 2 DIMMs of any capacity, even 2 x 4GB DIMMs (as long as they are DDR4)? Can you borrow a couple DIMMs from another computer?

Reason: To determine whether this particular Corsair model has an issue or if your motherboard might have an issue. If another pair of DIMMs (ideally another pair of 2 x 16GB DIMMs) works, then we can blame the Corsair. Otherwise we may have to blame the motherboard or its firmware.
