izo1 you really are a funny guy, you telling people that they can’t affiord something, how do you know, have you seen my bank account, stop assuming, i have the money to buy the whole thing with monitor and stand. if i want to but i don’t like the design, you have to learn how to respect other people opinions, like i respect yours, even if we disagree, why can’t you respect mines? my hackintosh is worth like 10,000, so there isn’t so much difference in price compared to the mac pro, but at least i’m happy with it, i build it myself the way i like it, why you think i stopped buying already assemble computers from 3rd party manufacturers, yes some of them look nice and have a nice design but they lack horse power when you see what’s inside the box, i also been reading comments from people like you for a long time, anybody say something about apple and you get all defensive, no one is attacking you, just because you have the money to buy something it doesn’t mean you have to buy it, you buy it if you like it and you if think is a good deal, this is like when somebody try to sell you a broken down car for a ridiculous price, sorry but i don’t give my money away so easily, i bought my explorer cash, i’m not rich or millionaire but i’m not dying of starvation, i’m not upset at all, i’m actually having a good time

some people ate simply stubborn and they will never listen or understand, that kind of person has to learn the hard way, you are free to believe whatever you like, i don’t have any problem, it don’t buy stuff pay monthly payments, everything i have i bought it cash

I don't know, man. I'm not going to take someone seriously who has an anime profile picture :)

Please don't attack me personally, I didn't say anything negative about anyone. I just said that if you are really angry at the price then it's definitely not for you.

The only reason you spent that much on your build is because you like tinkering and are a techy person. The people who buy these Mac Pros are not, they usually have an IT department at these studios who take care of any problems. Think of them as working stations that can't have any downtime, and if they do, they simply swap it and don't fix it on the spot.

Yes I get it, you love macOS, and maybe Macs in general, but macOS was never meant to work outside of a real Apple computer.

I also spent a lot of money on my Hackintosh (see my signature) but that's because I was desperate and the Mac Pro wasn't out at the time. I would love to get rid of this thing and get the new Mac Pro, maybe a 16 core, 1TB, Vega II version, but I am not sure if this thing has a resale value.

If you scroll-back a few pages you will see that I am also complaining about this thing, I think the base model is ridiculous, especially the GPU. They could have thrown in a Vega 64 at least or a Radeon VII and a minimum of 1TB drive like the iMac Pro...I am not saying it's perfect, but it's pretty much close to what people were looking for for years after the trash can.

now we are finally getting some where, i’m not attacking you, you picture is a crap or a scorpion, i think and i take you seriously  yes that is exactly my point i also wanted to buy the mac pro and i waited and since apple took so many years i decided to make a good hackintosh instead, got tired of waiting, i could easily sale some of my computer parts on ebay and make some money then i can put whatever i need to complete the money to buy the mac pro but when i saw the price and the design i decided that it was not worth it, at least for me, i never had any problem with you, i’m sorry if i said something that you probably misundertood, my english is not 100%. anyway peace

Would I have had spent time in a better way? Sure. Did I have fun? Yeah, but it's getting tiresome.

Even if I spent half the time less it still was more time then it would cost me to work and build the new Mac Pro. Did a learn a reasonable amount sure, did it allow me to fix my friends hack that he could never boot from anything other then USB yes. Was it a fair trade in time = learning/fun not sure, had I not tried to make a hack I would likely have gotten a iMac Pro with Vega 56 and upgraded the memory myself. I likely would not have taken on more work to fill the empty time but I might have filled it with snowboarding....

You should go post at MacRumors, there's a lot of replies like yours.

You have to take a look at the following for the bigger picture.

1) The Cascade Lake Xeon's the new Mac Pro is using has 64 PCIe lanes...compared to 44 on the Skylake-X that me and you both have. It is priced at $1200 on Intel's website, but the one Apple seems to be using has a different SKU. Maybe it's more expensive.

2) It has a ton of PCIe slots, more than what a custom Hackintosh or even a PC would have.

3) Custom programmable ASIC support called AfterBurner (RED users will rejoice)..not just for 4/5k but also 8k. And people who edit ProRes 422/444/Raw will rejoice too. I am not sure what the cost of this card will be, but no other PC has this capability. A Titan/2080 RTX can handle only ONE stream of 8k RED RAW footage.

4) Upgradability (CPU, RAM) and there seems to be a slot for a SSD/HDD cage with SATA ports. They may have upgradeable OS SSDs too, but I am not sure. They want to keep it tied to the T2 chip for the OS drive.

5) Macs keep the resale value

6) Longevity

7) Base model price is comparable to same HP workstation model

8) Really good support with Apple Care (they still have the enterprise level warranty support I believe, even after killing XServe)

9) A solidly built workhorse with very low downtime

Yes, maybe this $6k model is pricing out a lot of people who otherwise would have been able to afford it....but if they really need this model they will get it. The 2019 iMac is already a pretty damn good machine and single core is probably better than the base model Mac Pro...

And yeah the $6000 display is definitely out of reach for most consumers. That's why they still sell the LG 4K Thunderbolt monitors.

Anyway, we should ALL be happy especially with Adobe, Otoy, etc all chipping into Metal support because that was lacking heavily. I'd love to use Octane on my AMD GPU, I used to with my previous build which had dual 980Tis.

Yeah I had a fully modded 2010 Mac Pro with all the upgrades, but got tired of "hacking" that too, so I went with a Hackintosh in 2015. Then went higher end build in 2018.

I did not want the iMac Pro because I hate all in ones, I want to have the ability to pick my own monitors.

You can just throw your own Vega 64 or VII in with the MPX RX580... People keep saying that to get more TB ports you need a MPX module but no one mentions that the 580 would likely have 4 TB itself on top of what ever the board has. Mac OS should not care about the 580 and the Vega and should load balance around the two cards.

Also I loved my Trashcan the video cards were weak after a year or two and could not be upgraded but it is in use everyday. And for its faults if you got a lower end one you could upgrade the processor later, and memory, and OWC sells an internal hard drive to upgrade it. It has plenty of processing power for what it is used for the since it is used in audio production the video card is not relevant. My the things I liked the best about it was that 6" --> 4" rubber plumbing reducer fit perfectly over the top connected to 4" flex duct to the outside kept all that nasty heat out of my office.

Yeah that's the cool part, and new 5700XT...I wonder why they just didn't include that instead of the really cheap RX580? But remember the original base Mac Pro had an underpowered GPU too. Apple always does this.

I really avoided the Trashcan, although I needed an upgrade at the time, for that reason..underpowered GPUs. That was the dumbest design since the Apple Cube, imo. They really made a mistake with that model. No wonder they didn't upgrade the thing for 5 years

I liked the Cube. It had a standard AGP slot.

It was beautiful, but didn't sell well due to having a passive cooler and mighty pricey for what it was.

I had a blue G3 around that time and I loved that thing.

Apple used to be cool.

A $3000 Mac Pro isn't possible - at this point in the market that would be a really nice consumer gaming build. It wouldn't be a real Mac pro level of hardware and it would be limited to the constraints of the number of PCIe lanes. It wouldn't be a Pro level machine with Pro level hardware at that price.

iMac Pro starts at $5000, but it does have a reasonable screen at that price.

Depends on what you define your specific needs. Also, could we please drop this whole "pro/professional" term that Apple has infected us with? I've been working in the entertainment/post-production industry for the better part of a quarter of a century without ever even contemplating about needing a job outside of it. Compared to most of my peers I do pretty well financially, and yet the idea of spending as much on a new computer as a car makes me pretty nervous (a car will last me a good 8-10 years and perform exactly what I need it to do. A computer? I don't think so).

In 2006, going with Xeon CPU's made sense because there really wasn't anything comparable on the market if you wanted multi-core and dual CPU's. Nowadays, an i9 X-series can be had for less than $1000 and it supports 4-channel DDR4 RAM up to 128Gb and up to 44 PCI lanes which is plenty for the majority of high-end users.

Linus Tech Tips specced out an exact same system as the base Mac Pro and it added up to $3160

Is the fugly (sorry apologists...praise Apple for their laptop designs, iPhones, even the Mac mini is pretty sitting on a desk...but this thing is bigly fugly and you know it) cheese grater enclosure really worth almost $3k?!?

Lastly, does it strike anyone else as weirdly ironic that we're having this debate on this particular web site?
