Or AMD may be working on a hybrid X86/Arm chip for Apple. That way macOS could still support all of the current iMac Pros that people have heavily invested in for their professional work. Intel based iMac Pros start at five grand and go up to something like 13,000 dollars. A complete switch to ARM by 2022 would really alienate owners of those. That is not a minor hardware investment. They would be stuck on older versions of macOS. I know that some Video Pros do that anyway but it's still not fair or advisable to do that to your customers if you want them to buy your products.

Yeah exactly. Although I would split between the Desktop machines and the Macbooks. I can see an Apple made chip be absolutely great on a 12 inch Macbook and be optimized very well to be one of the best laptop on the market... I mean Battery life could be crazy good. iMacs on the other side...

The naming of the next version of USB and the renaming of current USB standards is absolutely ridiculous!!

What used to be known as USB 3.0 became USB 3.1 gen 1, and has now been renamed to USB 3.2 gen 1.
What used to be known as USB 3.1 became USB 3.1 gen 2, and has now been renamed to USB 3.2 gen 2.
The next version of USB (20Gb/s) will be known as USB 3.2 gen 2x2.

I see no reason for any of this other than to confuse and trick consumers. Ridiculous!

Despite the stupid %#$@&!^ naming, it's good to see the latest iteration of USB have the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 2 (albeit probably with increased latency).

You would think AMD had a part in the naming scheme. Like the Vega 20/really a Lexa chip vs the Vega 20/Radeon vii.

last paragraph - Last October, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a note to investors predicted an ARM-based mac to arrive in 2020 or 2021. More recently, Intel officials in February told Axios they expect the tech giant to make the switch "as soon as next year."
Ming-Chi Kuo has been right a lot in the past but why would Intel say such a thing, esp. if it were true?

Exactly. The last time a story like this posted their stock dropped precipitously, losing millions of dollars in market cap. Everyone that works at Intel most likely owns stock in the company. Doubt they want to make themselves poorer.

I have no personal interest in Macs running on ARM. I'm tired of custom CPUs. I wasted so much money on Motorola/IBM based macs. I don't think I will ever get over it. People buy Macs today knowing if Apple goes belly up, they can install WIn10 or something else. Highly proprietary hardware has no place on the desk unless you are a low end mac user that doesn't care what is under the hood.

You just described a majority of Apple's user base. Most are casual computer users who use their Macs to check email and stream Netflix, and don't really care whats under the hood as long as the system is fast and stable.

Apple no longer seems to care about it's pro users, which is evidenced by their recent 'dumbing down' of Final Cut Pro and Logic X.

Apple also has always wanted full control of all hardware components, creating their own ARM processors will:
a)Allow them to merge MacOS and iOS into one (which is already underway)
b)Restrict user customization of their computer (which they love doing)
c)Prevent further hackintosh creation
d)Prevent people from using Windows on a Mac like the good 'ol days of Motorola processors

All these sound like win win's for Apple.
