LG UltraFine 5K Build

It sounds like you're saying dual graphics cards won't help because the secondary card can only be used for off-screen rendering or GPGPU. That's not true. macOS has always been able to support multiple graphics cards with displays connected to each.

Thanks! I didn't realise it's supported - that makes the setup simpler than I thought.

Actually, the DisplayPort 1.4 MST Hub in the HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 is not sufficient since the USB-C connection reserves two of the four lanes for USB.
I've managed to get this to work in Windows with a Dell UP2715K and a GC-TITAN RIDGE.
More info at eGPU.io.

This won't be useful to you since you want to use macOS though.

For an LG UltraFine 5K display, you need a GC-TITAN RIDGE and either another GC-TITAN RIDGE or a GC-ALPINE RIDGE.

You need a GC-TITAN RIDGE to convert a single DisplayPort 1.4 MST signal to Thunderbolt 3, then the DisplayPort 1.4 MST Hub in the HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 can convert that to two DisplayPort 1.2 SST signals. Then the second Thunderbolt card converts those two DisplayPort 1.2 signals to Thunderbolt 3 for the LG UltraFine 5K display.

So you need four Thunderbolt 3 cards for two Thunderbolt 3 5K displays. Or you can wait for a non-Thunderbolt DisplayPort 1.4 MST hub.

Hi guys, can you help me
Would work LG 5K with this grafics
GIGABYTE AMD Radeon VII , GV-RVEGA20-16GD-B and ALPINE RIDGE ? Compatible D.p 1.2 on Apine RIDGE with d.p 1.4 . And would it work correct and give really 5K on out?

Hi, I have a Radeon VII, Titan Ridge and an Ultrafine 5K. With Win10 it works out of the Box with sound and camera. MacOS 10.14.5 Beta works only 4K or less. In monitor settings there are 2 entries for the display. Will post some screenshots later. Sound and cam and brightness controll works also very well with macOS.

This is what happens when I connect the LG to to the Titan Ridge Thunderbolt Card. Titan Ridge is connected to the Radeon VII with 2 x DisplayPort cables.
There is only 1 (not 2) LG Ultrafine 5k connected to the Thunderbolt card but macOS detects 2 separate monitors.

It shows two monitors because Mac OS notices when a cable is plugged into a port, even if the monitor is off or even if two ports on the same monitor. Also it looks like you are only getting about 50% of the width of the monitor. What happens if you only plug in one DP?

The main difference between the Alpine Ridge and the Titan Ridge is that the Titan Ridge does DP1.4 and the Alpine Ridge does DP1.2

Tried with only one port but the screen stays black. Powered on but black.

Maybe there is something wrong with the iGPU. During the weekend I will make a new hackintosh, same components but with a Z390 Designare Mainboard. I hope it will work.

Designare board is a good choice for working TB3.

Those of you with the 'two screens' issue, have you tried adding agdpmod=pikera to your boot arguments?
