A couple of things to note here. The Radeon vii is $699 US, the RTX 2080ti is $1200-&1500, almost double the cost yet not close to double the performance. I have a Luxmark Ball bench of 59,000+ it’s 3rd place in single card scores. Go to Luxmark web site and check. It was done with a reference 3 fan stock card with the latest wattman at 2150MHz and 1200mhz memory. It is beating the crap out of RTX Titans! Frame rates are good for gamers but compute rates are important for developers. The thing is most people don’t game on Apple computers so the frame rate argument doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in the Apple work load environment. Nvidia Cuda cores were great for Apple work loads but AMD cards like the RX 500 series and Vega’s are taking over the crown in this field as far as Apple software Apps. It is a trend and you can fight it all you want but it won’t make it any better. It’s unfortunate that Nvidia can’t get into the Apple ecosphere with their latest products, but also ask yourself. Why hasn’t Nvidia made High Sierra drivers for the RTX series cards? Mojave lockout should not be an excuse for not making them for High Sierra, Sierra etc...
you got some good points there, I give you that
you are also right about some of the things that you mentioned

I'm curious as to what the new Vega 64X in the iMac Pro is. Clues seem to indicate it's a Vega 20 card which bodes well for those who already own Radeon VIIs. However, it's only available with 8GB from Apple...

Also, the Vega 48 in the new iMacs leaves some question marks...

I think you mean $$$$$ they are going to sell so many of these. This can only mean the Vega driver is going to get better and you will get a true SM for your CPU.

Yes. I was excited about the new system definition once the news was released.

Yes. This would have been the iMac I purchased if I were in the market for one. It's basically an Apple made version of what I'm using. Lol

@ $3200 is is not far off the cost to build your system either that is if you are looking at getting a high end monitor. (I know you have sworn off high end monitors)!

Yes. Total cost would have been pretty close once the 5K monitor is factored in. It's good that they kept the RAM user upgradeable and lack of a T2 chip bodes well for the hackintosh community.

I've sworn off high end TVs, not monitors. Lol. I never had a monitor die on me, just TVs never seem to last more than 3 years for me.

Yea apple memory upgrades are always off the charts. I am really hoping they drop the new Mac Pro and it is proper; though I fear its going to be like a More Powerful Mac mini with more Thunderbolt 3 Ports so you can connect 5 Egpu to it.

In terms of design, I'm a bit more optimistic. Rumors have it that it will be like Lego bricks where components can be stacked on. I don't have a problem with this if the additional devices connect to PCH. I would not be happy if everything had to be tunneled through Thunderbolt. The thing that concerns me is that it will probably be so expensive that it's out of reach for most people.

Those hoping for a rebirth of the old MacPro1,1-5,1 or even PowerMacs will probably be disappointed.

Btw, congrats to AMD on the big win over Nvidia for the Google cloud gaming contract.

I am not sure what would disappoint me. Upgradeable GPU from off the shelf component is High on that list. Memory is also. Either of those items would disappoint me. Hard Drives can remain on the TB3 I have had them on TB2 with the Trashcan.

Yeah, if we are able to upgrade GPU and RAM from off the shelf stuff we can get from Micro Center or Fry's would be great. That would imply easily accessible PCI-e slots and DIMM slots. That's what just about everyone is hoping for. I don't know if Apple will give that to users.

If they take the Lego bricks approach, there will probably proprietary connectors involved. If 3rd parties develop and sell adaptors, it will still be better than the MacPro6,1 situation where the entire card is a proprietary form factor.

I think room for lots of storage nowadays is much less of a concern. I know that I rely on my NAS for storage a lot more now and 10GbE is fast and reliable.
