[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

@CaseySJ,

you mean chipset? yes - 20702B0, the firmware though is v150 c9318. Locale is still of though - ETSI (but as long as it works ...), the Country is US. It is interesting how the cards in their stock are so random ...

It is saying though all those features are supported (see below) and handoff is checked on the settings. When I tried to do Auto unlock, "Turning on" is showing up forever and ends up with error that it could not connect to my watch.
This is actually a more promising listing! For Apple Watch Unlock, have you already tried the suggestions in my earlier post?

Ouch! Unfortunately you may have received a defective or fake card.
  • For WiFi, your screenshot is missing the supported PHY modes and has AirDrop channel 0.

  • Your Bluetooth settings are quite broken. You're missing a Bluetooth address (like a MAC address), your "Manufacturer" is Ericsson instead of "Broadcom", there is no Chipset and Firmware data, and the Vendor/Product IDs are not Broadcom.

Sheesh! I’ll return it to Newegg. Thanks

Hi Casey,

Thanks so much for your wonderful guide. I'm going to be attempting this build over the weekend (just waiting for the last of my parts to arrive). I did have a couple quick questions before starting:
  1. I purchased this Fenvi card here in the time when you were recommending them, but then found out only certain ones work. It says "BCM94360" on the page, which is now a reject in the guide. Is this the same card that you received and tested out? I'm hoping it will work in the long slot, but buying another card is not a big deal.

  2. The Fenvi card I purchased probably won't arrive before I want to attempt the build. Is it okay to build without it and then slot it in after I have everything running?

  3. Since Macs are now supporting 9th gen intel processors, do you think it's wise to wait for a new Mojave version + possible guide update and try to follow that instead? I'm in a weird spot timing wise as you can imagine, since I don't have my system running but am planning to build in the next couple days.
Welcome to the forum! And you are quite right about being caught between a changing-of-the-guards! Some specific comments:
  • There seem to be fake Fenvi cards being pedaled by unscrupulous vendors. I would suggest buying from NewEgg first and secondly from "cityeliter" on eBay. (I purchased mine from "cityeliter".) I cannot vouch for any other vendor.
  • You can certainly build the system without the WiFi/BT card. It can be added later, and in fact it is just plug-and-play! No drivers or config.plist modifications needed.
  • I think Mojave 10.14.4 can be an important update for all of us with 9th Gen Coffee Lake processors because this would be the very first macOS to support this chip natively, including full power management and internal GPU. We may even need to use a different Platform ID and/or SMBIOS name for best compatibility. So I think there will be a fair bit of experimentation before the Build Guide gets updated.
  • But herein lies the rub: We can change Platform ID without thinking twice about software licenses and iCloud registration. But we cannot change SMBIOS in such a casual manner. An SMBIOS change can have significant repercussions for software licenses and iCloud accounts.
  • So if you can wait, it would be advisable to do so until we have worked out the kinks with 10.14.4 so you don't have to worry about switching SMBIOS.
  • On the other hand, you can install 10.14.3, but delay the installation of your licensed third-party applications until 10.14.4 is ready for installation on this motherboard. This will minimize the impact of a future SMBIOS change.

Hey Casey...
In my never-ending quest to get BT and Wifi working on my machine I am back.
I purchased the Fenvi card (since none of the other solutions got me anywhere) and installed it in the last long slot on the motherboard. Is there some other config needed, once I installed it I still don't have BT and now I no longer have Wifi.
Kind of at wits end here.
EDIT:
Sorry, in my rush I neglected to add the IOReg an System reports
Make sure to document all this. Don't just send the card back. Talk to an upper level supervisor and tell him or her they need to really look into this. These cards cost 55 USD and they are getting defective or fake cards. That is just not right. Obviously Newegg is not testing any of these when they come in.

Sheesh! I’ll return it to Newegg. Thanks
I am surprised you received that from NewEgg. However, they have 2 vendors:

Did you choose the "Fenvi Official Store" on the left or "Corn Electronics" on the right?

Just did, but it still comes back with "Your Mac was unable to communicate with your Apple Watch" error. I'm using iMac14,2 , but still should be compatible as it is Late 2013 model. There is no single hint that handoff would work either, even though went through the setup. Does it matter at this point where the card sits since WiFi and BT work? It is currently at x1 slot closest to CPU.

Did you sign out and back in to iCloud on everything first. If not try that and see if it changes.

@trs96 ,

Yess!! Done! After signing out on all the devices and repeating @CaseySJ steps everything started working. So far tested Auto unlock and hand off. I think signing out on iPhone probably pushed it further as I noticed immediately auto unlock option disappeared from settings and then showed up again after signing back in on the iPhone. I forgot to unlock the watch and after checking that box it reminded me to unlock it. I understood at that point my mac was able to connect.

@trs96 and @CaseySJ , thank you so much guys for all your help!

Nice find! Yes, two of these would satisfy my bandwidth needs. And since I could install these into the X1 ports, that'll leave the PCIEX8 and PCIEX4 unoccupied for future use. Thanks!

Just ordered it. Will report back after I try it out.

Another Thunderbolt Audio Devices:
Apogee Element 24 (Thunderbolt 2 with Apple Adapter TB3-TB2 + TB2 Apple Cable).
