[SUCCESS] Gigabyte Designare Z390 (Thunderbolt 3) + i7-9700K + AMD RX 580

I'm having difficulty getting past the first stage of installation.

I've configured my USB drive and BIOS according to page 1 of this thread. USB drive is in HS09 or HS10. I've tried with and without a keyboard plugged in. I power on the machine, F12 at the BIOS, then select the 'Boot macOS Install from Install macOS Mojave'.

Sometimes when I get to this line, it pauses - and then the screen goes black and doesn't come back. Sometimes it gets a few lines further before going black.

Seems to be trying to sync network time? There is no wired or wireless connectivity - I didn't think the machine had to be online? I've tried with:

SMBIOS -> iMac14,2 with everything blank
SMBIOS -> iMacPro1,1 with everything filled in
SMBIOS -> iMac18,3 with everything filled in

I've tried using one of the DP ports on the GPU and the HDMI port on the motherboard. I get a display from the GPU, but nothing at all from the motherboard HDMI. Any ideas much appreciated.

Alex

Edit: here is the final line before the screen goes dark:

No problem, here it is

Thanks again for your time!
Your CLOVER configuration looks perfectly good -- at least for 10.14.2 on which it was based. However, if we trust the error message, it's saying that the system failed to map IGPU device ID 0x3E988086 to a known SKU. This will happen because the native IGPU device ID of the 9th Gen Intel CPU is not known to Mojave. But we can spoof the ID to 0x3E9B8086, which is one of the known types.

Please replace the config.plist in the EFI partition of your USB disk with the attached version and let's see if boot succeeds. The monitor should remain connected to the RX 580.

Several questions / comments:
  • Which version of macOS are you installing? 10.14.2? 10.14.3?
  • When the system boots to this point (just at or after gIOScreenLockState or DSMOS has arrived), do both the Vega-DP and Onboard-HDMI ports go blank?
  • Please compress and upload your CLOVER folder from the EFI partition of the USB install disk.

10.14.3
Vega DP is the only way I can get any display. - onboard HDMI doesn't work, even for the BIOS UI.
CLOVER folder attached

Edit: This guy experienced a black screen/freeze before getting to the Mojave installer UI, and he fixed it with a BIOS downgrade from 12 to 11 (on a Z370 board). I updated my BIOS to F4 as per page 1. Also available are F5 and F6c - which are you using?

Thanks Casey,

Unfortunately it still KPs at the same stage. Could disabling the iGPU in the BIOS help ?

That has definitely helped some people, particularly those with Vega GPUs. But some RX 580 cards may also be problematic, such as the Sapphire Nitros.

So yes, please try disabling IGPU in BIOS.

That did it!

I’ll perform the post-install now, and report back.

Thanks again for your help!

  • You are using platform ID 0x3E920003. This is a headless platform, which disables all video output from the IGPU. Moreover, you haven't specified a "device-id" in Devices --> Properties. You should specify device-id = 0x3E9B.
  • BIOS and CLOVER screens will only appear through on-board HDMI if your BIOS --> Peripherals section has Initial Display Output set to IGFX or Auto.
  • You are using VirtualSMC instead of FakeSMC. Please try again with FakeSMC.
  • Your drivers64UEFI folder is missing DataHubDxe-64.efi. This may or may not cause a problem, but should be included.
If above changes do not solve the problem, then also try disabling IGPU in BIOS.

This is uncommon for an RX 580 so I'm curious to know the Make and Model of your RX 580.

For example, mine is: Make = MSI, Model = RX 580 Gaming X.

It’s a Sapphire Pulse 8GB
