Hey-up, gurus,

thanks to you, I've run Sierra for ages with virtually no issues aside from some known macOS bugs, no Sleep mode, and the inability to stream protected video within Safari/iTunes. The system sports native CPU power management, Intel Quick Sync Video => Airplay, a custom BroadCom-based wireless card fully supporting Continuity/Handoff, even iMessage/FaceTime, but alas... a reference GTX960 with no drivers available for Mojave, which I'm quite eager to try. Now, replacing the 960 with one of the Apple-sanctioned Mojave cards would either require a significant downgrade to the likes of the GTX680/RX560 or, in the case of the RX580, a more capable PSU, as my current FSP only packs 350 watts.

So...would it be possible to smoothly run Mojave on the HD 4460, while keeping the GTX960 for Windows gaming? If so, would the presence of an unsupported dedicated card mess macOS up? If not, which card from the list could be a feasible alternative? Apple also mentions the RX570 series, which might not require a better PSU, but could anyone tell me what make and model would be turnkey?

Many thanks in advance!

I saw your post and with your Mojave-non-supported Nvidia GTX 960 retained within its current PCIE slot to run Mojave and Windows (I guess Windows 10) to use two different Cards seem to me a difficult task and therefore did not want to take up the challenge of a tight rope walk to guide you.

Do you have two monitors or one? What port are you considering to connect the Non-supported Nvidia card to?
There are too many conflicting variables and you can get into a nightmare troubleshoot that can last quite a while and eventual outcome would be uncertain.

If you want a more Powerful Video card that works both in Mojave and Windows 10, go for AMDs latest ones. For Real iMac 300 Watts PSU is OK. I am not so sure it will be ideal for Hackintosh running Windows with 3 or more drives.

If you want to switch to Mojave removing the unsupported Nvidia card replacing with an AMD Card will be the better option.

Anyway, list all the hardware you have in your PC, its BIOS screen shots and whether you will be willing to have a Mojave without the current Nvidia card, you will get more volunteers to help you in this Forum.
Good luck.

First and foremost, thanks for replying! I am indeed willing to get rid of the GTX960 in favour of a compatible AMD card, but am uncertain as to the exact make and model as Apple isn't specific regarding the RX570 series. They just state some cards might be supported. As for the RX580, I've come across numerous posts stating a 350W PSU won't do.

The exhaustive hardware list is as follows:

GIGABYTE GA-H81M-S2V MoBo
Intel Core i5-4460 / HD 4600 CPU / iGPU
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 2 GB graphics
8 GB Kingston RAM
WD Blue 512 GB SSD
Samsung Blu-Ray optical drive
Dell U2311H monitor

Any input would be appreciated!

I see only a single WD Blue 512 GB SSD on your system. Is that Sierra Disk? Where are you planning to install Mojave? Where is your Windows 10?

  • In one of my Computers with GA-Z370P D3 I have installed MSI Radeon RX 560 4GB with HDMI< DVI and DP I have my Monitor connected via HDMI. For full hardware details and installation steps with images, you can check here: https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/success-mojave-14-2-on-ga-z370p-d3-i5-8600k-intelhd630.268319/
  • As you said the current AMD Video Cards in the Radeon RX series do need a PSU with Minimum 400 Watts. All my systems run with 4- 6 Hard disks with Multiple OSes and I go for 750-1000 Watts PSUs.
  • Your MoBo is Intel 8 Series. I have a GA -B85M-DS3H + Intel i3-4150 (intel HD 4400) which is closer to your system and that too has multiple OSes. I have an Nvidia GT 710 on that.

You may get a RX 580 to run on a good 350W, but it's gonna be REALLY close to the edges, over that if not all the wattage is on the 12v rail or your CPU is power hungry. There is a figure here showing a power consumption comparison of a few cards (GTX 960 and RX 580 included).
It would be better to upgrade you PSU. You don't need anything too fancy, my RX 580 runs with no sweat on a Corsair SF450. You can actually find a modular 450W for around 50 bucks (if you live in the US).

That's why I'm looking for a compatible 570. Reckon it isn't as demanding as the 580. For a most funny reason, I'd like to steer clear of hardware modifications other than replacing the graphics card for now.

It's a dual-boot config with Windows 10 and macOS Sierra coexisting on one drive, but occupying separate volumes. The bootloader I'm using is Clover. I'd like to upgrade to Mojave directly from the App Store. Regarding the MSI's RX560, I know it's supported. However, it's slower than the GTX960 even though it packs twice the VRAM

Thanks! However, given that the card is
supposed to work out-of-the-box, I'm rather concerned about the following:

Only required settings in config.plist required were

Does it just have to do with switching from NVidia to AMD? I've seen reports of successful updates with no further tinkering on an ASUS-made gaming edition of the RX570 here. I think it's called Strix. Can't seem to find that post now. Reckon the user was on AMD already when they updated?

P.S. Sapphire also sell a bunch of different models within the 570 series, that is, Nitro, Pulse, and so on. Does it matter?
