Dear forum,
recently, I got started with my first Customac. In the absence of a real Mac, I purchased Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Instead of buying new hardware, I tried installation on my old gaming rig (specs in the signature; RX 470 not installed; only 1x8GB RAM installed).
Here is what worked so far:
  • Boot iBoot Ivy Bridge (since it's a Sandy Bridge CPU, but a Z77 board)
  • Boot Snow Leopard DVD, start installer
  • Install Snow Leopard 10.6.3 to 150 GB HDD partition
  • Reboot (via iBoot CD)
  • Update to 10.6.6 via DMG from Apple
  • Update to 10.6.7 via DMG from Apple
  • Install UpdateHelper
  • Install EasyBeast and System Utilities via MultiBeast
  • Sign into Mac App Store with Apple ID
And here is what does not work:
  • Download OS X El Capitan (when I click "Get", nothing happens)
  • Boot into 10.6.8: Tried upgrading via DMG, but afterwards, I just get a black screen, although I followed the guide exactly :(
Fortunately, I was able to get back to 10.6.7 via TimeMachine backup.
According to this post, 10.6.8 is not needed to upgrade, but this information appears to be out-of-date; this Mac App Store update is necessary to download El Capitan, but is not offered on 10.6.7.
Any suggestions how I could proceed?

Anyone, please?

You need to keep booting from the iBoot Ivy Bridge CD throughout the whole process for the HD2000 graphics to work. Don't install EasyBeast and boot from the HDD, it doesn't work.

The Snow Leopard Guide that you followed came out well before Ivy Bridge was even a thing. Z77 and Ivy Bridge has no real support in SL so that is why you must use iBoot IB.

So you are saying if I re-install 10.6.3, go to 10.6.6, 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 without UpdateHelper / MultiBeast, 10.6.8 should finally boot? For the record: 10.6.8 did not boot (til now) even with iBoot IB CD! Either kernel panic, black screen or reboots.
Just wanna make sure before I spend another 2 hours trying.

I don't think you'll have to do all that. First try booting from iBoot CD and see if that gets you to the desktop. If not you may need to remove Chimera Bootloader or the whole /extra folder and then shut down. Boot from iBoot and see if you can reach the desktop. I've not tried this as SL is already almost 10 years old now. I started out with Lion and never needed to install SL. It's worth a try to see if it works. If not just reinstall from scratch. You may need update helper. You have an i7 Sandy Bridge CPU so that may need it but again, I'm not completely sure, try without it first.

Also note that you can go straight from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 without installing the .6 or .7 versions.

Each time I started MacOSXUpd10.6.7.dmg, I was told I needed at least 10.6.6 installed.

I went back to 10.6.7 via TimeMachine, removed Extra folder, rebooted via iBoot and got to the desktop. So far, so good.
Now after installing 10.6.8 v1.1 (via Software Update), I get a kernel panic.
Code:
Kernel extensions in backtrace:
    org.voodoo.driver.VoodooHDA...
        dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)...
        dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOAudioFamily(1.8.3fc2)...
    com.apple.iokit.IOAudioFamily(1.8.3fc2)
        dependency: com.apple.kext.OSvKernDSPLib(1.3)...
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task

Honestly, I don't care about 10.6.8, I just want to get to any later version (at least El Capitan). Is it possible to get there without 10.6.8? If so, how? Again, I can get to El Capitan in App Store even in 10.6.7, but
when I click "Get", nothing happens
:(

You need 10.6.8 to download El Cap. Try deleting the VoodooHDA kext and it should clear up the panic.
Working audio is not at all needed for the app store to work obviously.

Strange, because in an earlier post it was said you could go further even from 10.6.7.
Where do I find VoodooHDA kext? In 10.6.7, it is not in /System/Library/Extensions. If it is written there by the 10.6.8 installation routine, how can I delete it if I can get the system to boot? I suppose there is no chroot for OSX!?
Is the kext loaded by iBoot CD? If so, how can I block it from being loaded?

That post is from October 2013. Not relevant in 2019. El Capitan didn't even exist then. Try searching for the VoodooHDA kext and it should show up. If you used Multibeast to install it then it should be in /S/L/E. If you are still having trouble booting use safe mode flag -x to get in and delete the kext.

Wow! After 20th attempt or so, I am finally able to boot into 10.6.8!!! Only possible with iBoot CD and following boot parameters:
Code:
-v -f
I performed all software updates and rebooted, again with -v -f
Now, when I press Get in Mac App Store, I am prompted to insert my AppleID credentials. I do this, and I get
Code:

Any idea?
