DIY server/NAS for apple time machine.

Pastrychef, I'm thinking about a similar system (but lots less disk space -- lol) for when I move to a large house where there'll be 3 other family members with desktops and laptops, etc. A NAS would be great for us to share. Your configuration looks great but I've been reading about a bug in the BMC (whatever that is!) that was killing a lot of Atom CPU systems. Have you had any problems since the date of your posts? Have you changed anything?

Yes, I read about a bug in the C2550 and C2750 that kills the CPUs. I have not been hit with it yet. There's nothing I can do until it hits me. Here's an article that talks about it:

Since then, Intel has released newer CPUs that fix the bug. The C3558 and C3758. If I were to build today, I would consider this motherboard/CPU:

Thank you for that. Coincidentally, I was looking at lots of posts and articles and doing searches for alternatives and came across the C3558. So your advice seals the choice for me. I guess you would still recommend the XPEnology--Synology software over FreeNAS.
BTW, my Asrock Z270M--High Sierra 10.13.6 has been running so smoothly for months now that I don't think about it any more!

Currently, the latest version of the Synology DSM is 6.2.1. Xpenology doesn't work with this version yet, so we are stuck at 6.2. It's sort of like being stuck on High Sierra 10.13.0 while the latest version is 10.13.6.

I don't have a problem with this since 6.2 does everything I need it to. I could even live with being stuck on 6.2 forever since APF and NFS work fine. It's not like on macOS where lots of software require the latest version of the operating system. On my NAS, I only run Plex server and it runs fine on 6.2.

Personally, yes, I would choose Xpenology over FreeNAS. I didn't like FeeNAS at all. If Xpenology were not an option, I would unRAID.

Yes, Z170, Z270, and Z370 are all running really well now. I haven't had to "fix" anything in a very long time.

I am also considering creating a personal mail server following a guide by Lee Hutchinson at Arstechnica. His guide is using Ubuntu server with a set of software including Prefix and Dovecot.
In case you know, would it be possible to install the mail server on an Xpenology NAS?
