This is a guide for installing OSX Sierra 10.13.4 onto the Asus P8Z68-V Pro boot using a Samsung 500GB 950 EVO SSD and a Nvidia GTX 1060 card.

Background To The Setup

So it had been a while since I had done a major macOS upgrade for my Asus P8Z68 V Pro board. The last guide I made for it was back in 2012 when I had installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on it. At the time the P8Z68 V Pro was one of the first commercially available boards with a UEFI BIOS on it, and so was all the rage. After using this setup mainly for PC gaming (as I migrated the OSX desktop over to the GA-Z77-UP5-TH), I'd thought it be fun to see how far I could stretch a nearly 6 year old Sandy Bridge system to run High Sierra.

Since my last update, I had upgraded my system to include 32GB of DDR3 RAM, a new 500GB Samsung 950 EVO hard drive and a brand new Inno3D GTX 1060 card with 6GB of DDR5 RAM. At the time last year, I wanted to run Cyan's Obduction on the system but my MSI GTX 560 Ti Frozr III GFX card wasn't having it and it felt very sluggish. So I decided to upgrade the card, RAM and hard drive - these made a HUGE difference. The new system is now technically capable of VR with the new Inno3D card which has an impressive 6GB of RAM.

SETUP

1) Download the latest Unibeast and Multibeast for Sierra from Tonymacx86.
Connect system via Intel HDMI port to monitor.

2) Make a bootable Unibeast USB Key and install High Sierra 10.13.4 following the site's guide. I would advise to start using 10.13.1 if you can find it to create the Unibeast key, as this would avoid the problems associated with 10.13.2 where certain devices does not appear in the Clover menu selection. While the first part of the High Sierra installs using a 10.13.1 key, the installer does connect online to Apple's servers and does indeed retrieve the download for 10.13.4 via the ethernet port for the remainder. Installing the OS this way bypasses a lot of the issues surrounding updating from combo updates.

3A) Hold DEL to go into Boot. Update the ASUS BIOS firmware to latest 3603 firmware by saving BIOS to USB stick and running EZFlash within the Asus BIOS menu

(Auto setting should work in most situations until first set of Nvidia alternate drivers is installed where you should then use PCIE).

4) At Clover, press spacebar and boot into High Sierra using Verbose and Slide=0. Run Disk Utility and format the HD drive as Macintosh SSD using Macintosh Journaled format. Run Terminal and type:

before rebooting again to install High Sierra onto the HD using HFS instead of APFS.
Reboot into the system after installation. If the boot up fails, use your Unibeast installer stick to boot into Clover, then select the HD drive to continue the installation. Reboot again after it finishes.

6) Install and run Multibeast with the following settings:

7) Reboot the system. If the boot up fails, use your Unibeast installer stick to boot into Clover, then select the HD drive to continue the installation.

If setting up the Nvidia card, proceed below (do not reboot).
Otherwise reboot for Intel graphics setup.

Intel Card Setup

1) After reboot, set card to IGFX in Bios under Advanced Settings > System Agent Configuration > Graphics Configuration > Primary Display > IGFX

2) Boot into OSX ie. Verbose and Slide=0

3) Set and mount boot drive EFI folder using Clover Configurator:

Under ACPI > List of patches, add:
change EHC1 to EH01
change EHC2 to EH02
change HDAS to HDEF

Nvidia (Pascal) Card Setup

Setup for Pascal cards in Sierra 10.13.4 is rather tricky. Because it is a fairly lengthy process it is advised you leave your PC case open with the SSD drive accessible in case you need to remove it and modify the EFI folder of the boot drive on another computer using the external USB slot drive.

Install procedure:

1) After installing Sierra and/or Clover and Multibeast onto the boot drive, with the Nvidia card removed boot using Unibeast 10.13.1 stick into your drive using the following arguments > Verbose using Intel HDMI port. You should be able to boot into Sierra and then install the Nvidia alternate drivers (WebDriver-378.10.10.10.103) and the latest Lilu.kext, Nvidiagraphicsfixup.kext and Intelgraphicsfixup.kext into /EFI/Clover/kexts/10.13 using Kext Beast or Kext Utility. Also install clover v.2.4_ r4318, and under select Customize and select to install the EmuVariableUefi-64 to the boot drive. After the installs, shut down the system, and physically install the Nvidia card with power cable.

2) Boot using Nvidia card on HDMI port on your drive. If necessary boot using PCIE option in BIOS. Using normal boot option it should boot straight into the system. If it doesn't, select Verbose, dart=0 and darkwake=0.

3) Boot into OSX and update OSX to the next update and install corresponding Nvidia alternate driver update. Install Nvidiagraphicsfixup.kext into /EFI/Clover/kexts/10.13. Select Nvidia to boot with Web Driver in the taskbar. Restart system.

4) Install Nvidia CUDA drivers. Make sure SIPs is disabled. When it is all done, simply select your drive at Clover bootup (which should only have darkwake=0 and dart=0) and it should boot straight in without any issues.

I have a similar system to yours and have installed High Sierra 10.13.6.02 and dual boot Win 10 Pro(separate HD). I've had problems with USB cards and on board USB 3.0 since Sierra. I noted the following quote in your comprehensive build spec: "...hot-plugging and eject on USB 3.1 works". I can hot swap USB 3.x devices too but the speed is always USB 2.0. Can you explain further what you mean by "...USB 3.1 works"? How can that be? A further explanation would be appreciated. Thank you.
 
I noted a post above that a moderator that this page had been "moved" to Desktop Guides (DG). I'm not sure what that means since when I go to DG I always end up back here. That may suggest this page is not checked at all... At any rate I am confused by what it does mean. Is there anyone there checking these particular posts anymore? ...anyone there? Can anyone explain further what is meant by by "...USB 3.1 works"? Would most appreciate an answer about how you (or anyone) got USB 3.0/3.1 working on a Asus p8z68-vpro board with High Sierra. Thanks so much for you time and effort in writing the guide. Your config.plist would be most helpful.

Hi Joe139,

Regarding your questions, for the first part I stated only USB 2.0 works on the board and that separate to that USB 3.1 hot-plugging and ejecting works only. The speed is still USB 2.0 (same as your situation).

For your 2nd question, I would simply suggest getting a Umateck USB PCIe card and doing away with the onboard Asmedia chip for the USB 3.0, because that is simply too difficult to be supported at present. I've asked Rehabman about this whether the Asmedia USB would be supported using USBInjectAll and he said it just wasn't feasible at present.

for some reason my ssd isn't bootable and I have to boot to clover using the usb drive. any idea?

Hi, Can I use the front panel USB 3.0 of the Cooler Master MasterBox MB510L as "USB 3.0 external slot drive"?
is it possible to proceed without an external USB 3.0 drive slot?
