First build. Building primarily for use in home recording studio. Heavily invested in the UAD platform, Apollo 8p and OCTO Satellite require thunderbolt 2 (hence the converters). I've gone with a few quiet parts including the PSU, CPU heat sync and case. Please could anyone who has had experience with this combination of parts let me know of any potential issues.

I am also planning to potentially mildly overclock the CPU, if anyone has any advice please let me know.

Intel Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz 6-Core Processor
be quiet! Dark Rock Advanced C1 50.5 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing CPU Cooler
Thermal Compound: Arctic Silver - 5 High-Density Polysynthetic Silver 3.5g Thermal Paste

Gigabyte Z370XP SLI (rev. 1.0) ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Memory

Crucial MX300 1.1TB M.2-2280 Solid State Drive
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB G1 Gaming Video Card

DIYPC Silence-BK-Window ATX Mid Tower Case
be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 650W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

TP-Link Archer T9E PCI-Express x1 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi Adapter
Gigabyte (Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Card) Components Other GC-ALPINE RIDGE

APPLE Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter
IOGEAR GBU521 Bluetooth 4.0 USB Micro Adapter

OMG. I'm a UAD guy myself. I've been working on this build for 10 days. Thunderbolt does not work with Apollo 8 and my build -check my build signature. If you get Thunderbolt to work, please LMK. Otherwise this carefully constructed PC is going to relegated to the task of a headless Vienna Ensemble Pro server via ethernet. So far, it's been just terrible considering all the time I've spent researching, reading, installing, etc. I should have just bought a refurbished 8-core 6,2 and lived with the kernel panics. I sincerely hope you have better luck than I. I might just go to Windows 10. LMK you thoughts and your progress.

I’ve seen some posts about installing Windows to install the gigabyte alpine thunderbolt 3 card. Essentially you need to install the drivers in windows which (correct me if I’m wrong) flashes the card. Once that’s finished boot into OSX. Just make sure your interface or thunderbolt device is turned on before you turn your hackintosh on. Apparently people haven’t figured out a way to stop the card from being unrecognised by OSX if the device is turned on post boot sequence.

Check this build out and the instructions regarding the thunderbolt card:

Hope this helps and good luck. Let me know how you get on. Would love to know if this is the fix.

Thanks! I went through all of that power on, etc stuff. The problem is that the Thunderbolt Drivers are not loading in macOS.

So for now I'm installing Windows 10 again. I'll make a new High Sierra installer USB and check back on this as a hobby. But really just need a reliable production machine. I'll try it once the Apollo 8 Quad and Pro Tools are both solid.

Check out my build. Very similar to yours but I use the Gigabyte gaming 7 and UAD Apollo 8 and two satellites. your going to need the thunderbolt add on car as I don't think the motherboard you're looking to get has thunderbolt header.

Thanks for the advice. Definitely going to get the gigabyte gaming 7 now. I have an Apollo 8p and a OCTO satellite. How did you find setting up the gigabyte thunderbolt card?

Very easy. Basically it's a standard PCIE card with a cable to the motherboard so you lose one card slot. The thunderbolt three ports work and I use the thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 apple adapter. If you find them on eBay or amazon grab them as they are highly sought after in multiple communities.

Two things of note are:
1)you will have to boot into windows to "activate" the ports. I have a small windows 10 install on a secondary hard drive. Others on here have just booted off an external drive. I would update the Firmware on the card and the motherboard in windows while you are at it.

2) I have had various success utilizing both thunderbolt 3 ports at the same time. IE I had both of my satellites on one port and the Apollo 8 on the other using two apple thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapters and it worked fine. All three devices daisy chained on one port using an apple thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter and it worked fine. All three devices on one port with the apple adapter and a friends thunderbolt 2 array on the other port with apples adapter and it worked fine. However, recently I had all three devices daisy chained and added a thunderbolt 3 device (OWC's Thunderbolt 3 port docking station) to the second port and either I couldn't see it or I could see it and not my Apollo and satellites. The only way it would work is if I daisy chained to the thunderbolt 3 device first then used the adapter to go to thunderbolt 2 to the other devices. Very weird. But it wouldn't work in Mac OS or windows 10. Didn't try Linux but it looked as if Fedora saw all ports properly. There is a guy on here who has had success intermixing thunderbolt 3 and thunderbolt 2 devices and has my exact setup but we haven't figured out the problem with my system as he already updated to the Beta version of Mojave. Just an FYI if your expecting to be mixing thunderbolt 3 and thunderbolt 2 devices on separate ports.

I'm having a small trouble with my thunder bolt, I'm using the port of the Mobo z170x UG and I got some latency in my DAW. My setup is pretty much the same : apollo 16 + 2 satellites. Any idea how to improve it?

No. I don't have any latency. Do you have a built in port on the motherboard or did you purchase the add on card? I would check the cables, firmware of the Apollo and motherboard and make sure you have the correct options / setup in the bios, etc. If you have windows partition try the interface and see if you see the same issue.

Built-in port : yep
Firware : yep
Cables : working perfectly on another computer
Bios setup : followed the guide from Tonymacx86 and this one for the TB
No Windows partition :(
