XFX Vega 56 should be natively supported in MacOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and above since it is recommended by Apple for use in external GPU boxes. It should work with your build.

Do you think I should get a different OEM? I was told XFX are not as reliable so I have been considering the Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8GB. But then I came across this blog post that says: "High Sierra 10.13.2 a bug was introduced that caused sleep to no longer function on AMD Polaris graphic cards. This guide will fix broken sleep for AMD RX 560/570/580 graphic cards in macOS for hackintosh users."

Do you know if this bug was fixed in the current version of High Sierra (I can't find any posts mentioning this problem)?

Note: Tried posting link to the article but the link is being triggered by the spam filter.
A google search for "Guide to fixing broken sleep in High Sierra 10.13.2 for AMD RX 560, RX 570, RX 580" will produce the article in question for those that are curious.

Some older XFX cards do have problems with MacOS since they were using a custom VBIOS which is incompatible with MacOS. Apparently the RX 580 and Vega cards from XFX no longer have this problem with MacOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and above.

Do you want a Vega 56 or RX 580?

I don't use the Sleep function myself so I am afraid I can't help there.

I use a Sapphire RX 580 Pulse in my main system and it works with MacOS Sierra 10.12.6 (with the help of the Lilu and WhateverGreen kexts) and High Sierra 10.13.6 (natively).

Vega 56 or Rx 580? Leaning towards RX 580 to be safe but I'm not sure what I want or need. My main goal for my first build is to find something that is stable and requires minimal work arounds or works OOB. I keep changing my graphics card choice because of user input and old articles I come across. Would you say the Sapphire RX 580 is the safer bet?

If you are that worried about those XFX cards (though I see no reason why since Apple recommended them now), then just get a Sapphire Pulse RX 570 / 580 / Vega and they should work in MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6.

That article you referred to is about 10.13.2, and I believe it may no longer be relevant now that we are at 10.13.6.

Older posts are in most cases no longer applicable. High Sierra and Mojave beta favor RX cards.
Personally, I have 2 XFX RX 480s from the initial launch and we got them running in Sierra when it was a beta. Support has only gotten better with the newer OS releases.

XFX mine anyway came with a lifetime warranty if you register them after purchase. Both brands in fact all brands of RX 470-580 cards work.
XFX RX 460-560 models have a custom vbios that doesn’t work.

The Sapphire Pulse models are used by apple developers so they are probably the best card to get if you can find one, otherwise you can go with whichever best fits your budget and or preference.

On a side note, if you get a Vega card a 750 watt power supply is recommended. I know the 56 model uses less power but why take a chance? If it struggles it could affect other components like CPU or motherboard.

Whatevergreen and especially rad de init were developed for the wake from sleep issues with all AMD cards. And it seems apple replicated these fixes in their latest releases.

I made a build for a friend using a Sapphire RX 560 Pulse and it has worked great.

I have an MSI Vega 56 Air Boost in my personal build and it has also worked great.

It just depends on what you need/want. I have no problems recommending either.

I entered my current parts list into a bottleneck calculator and it says a Sapphire Pulse RX 570 could be a bottleneck with my i7 8700k.

I was thinking of downgrading my CPU to a i5 8400 or i5 8600 to minimize the bottleneck or go with a i7 8700 now and possibly upgrade my graphics card ( or add a second identical one) down the line. Previous posts about dual GPUs make it seem possible. In the future is it likely there will still be support for a second graphics card?
