[SOLVED] Sleep and shutdown not working on High Sierra

Wohoo, finally good news on my part! Everything working on my setup as far as I know, so I decided to share my solutions in a bit more detail. I hope this could help some of you guys battling the same shutdown and sleep issues.

Here's my setup (not certain of all names and I'm too lazy to check now):

- MOBO: GA-Z77X-UD5H (rev. 1.0!) with Bios version 14
- CPU: Intel i7-3770K
- GPU: Gigabyte Geforce GTX-670 OC
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3
- Power: Corsair 1000 W
- HDs:
- 2 TB drive for macOS
- 1 TB drive for video edits
- 1 TB drive for Windows 10
- 1 TB drive for Windows games (flight sims and such)
Other components aren't as important here.

At the moment I'm running macOS 11.13.3 but I'm planning to update to the latest in a few days. I'll report after that whether anything got broken.

BIOS images (I undertand some of these might be of little interest but I'll include them anyway as some may wonder...)

For sound to work (especially troublesome with my rev. 1.0 mobo) I've applied Toleda's patch -- you'll find it well documented all over this forum.

And one final, but very important finding -- in my case, at least: I had to disable Adobe Creative Cloud syncing! It was preventing sleep. With that thing on, my display would go off a second or two but then immediately wake up again. Also, the disks and fans kept spinning. Therefore, it tried to enter hibernation but the syncing setting did not allow. For me, disabling the sync is no problem as I don't use Adobe Cloud anyway. Here's an image of that, too.

Of course, these settings will only work 100 % with a similar hardware setup. Bear also in mind that I'm no way very knowledgeable about any of this, so I'm counting on other guys here to walk you through the internal workings. It's also appreciated if anyone notices "strange things" (for example, in my Clover settings) or unnecessary boxes ticked -- feel free to comment and suggest! BUT I'm reluctant to change anything unless you are totally sure that the change won't produce unwanted effects. Getting the Hack to this state has been an infuriating process every now and then and I wouldn't like to mess it up. ;)

Here's hoping that this could be of assistance to others too.

Hi keinowaara,

thanks for your post.

I have the same motherboard than you and a GTX 570d.

I updated from El Capitan to Sierra and from there to High Sierra in the same day. For the moment I have not been able to be able to use the GTX even with Nvidia Web or ACPI (shutdown and restart) to work fine.

Would you mind sharing your config.plist?

Thanks in advance

Any luck on the latest OS X 10.13.6? I have same generation architect ie. Ivy bridge cpu and Asus mobo, when i upgrade to 10.13.3, sleep not function properly. want to fix this by a clean reinstall to 10.13.6, aforementioned shutdown and sleep problem... :banghead:

Sorry to hear that, it was quite an ordeal to get sleep fixed. You mean 10.13.5? I did the update yesterday via combo update (skipping the security update of 10.13.4) and all is still well. Unfortunately I can offer no further suggestions to you. It might come down to some differences in motherboard architecture, maybe you just have to keep trying some different values in Clover... Best of luck anyway!

OS 10.13.5 update now done and all is well.

Here's what I did:

Before updating

- replaced apfs.efi with a new one on the EFI-disk
- replaced Lilu.kext with a new one on the EFI-disk (I'm not even sure whether I actually need one)
- updated Clover to the newest version

I ran the update as the combo one (skipping the security update of 10.13.4). This took ages. First there was an automatic reboot into the installer disk, then an automatic reboot where the installer disk had disappeared already and Clover was about to launch the first Windows EFI-partition. For some reason it didn't check my config.plist and instead tried to start with the first item at the left --> I quickly redirected it to my Mac disk. The next phase with the installer app on top took at least 45 min and around 45–40 minutes it seemed as if it was stuck for a looong time. Fortunately I was patient enough to let it run and finally it sped up for the rest of the process. A reboot led to proper recognition of the Clover boot choice. But even this reboot took way longer than normally and there was a phase where the screen was black for many minutes. Finally the info screens appeared and the desktop loaded.

After update

- had to fix sound through Multibeast
- installed NVIDIA new drivers
- updated CUDA
After the reboot everything has been working well. Phew...

thank you for the follow-up. i presume Asus mobo is the culprit of this annoying glitch. It seems that Gigabyte mobo is more Hackintosh friendly. After trying tampering Clover settings all day just can't get it right ( I'm novice ) , finally, i gave up. force shutdown a computer may do harm to hardwares eventually. Hope someone with the same spec can provide some useful information. BTW, I am posting this on another mac, I would attach the config.plist file later if needed.

PS:
rumor has it that after Apple abandon Intel CPU and use their own CPU in 2020 Hackintosh will meet its doom? Wow, this really matters to me, I like the versatile (gaming) of Hackintosh, since i fail to upgrade to the latest 10.13.5(some times I use Xcode to do some project, so latest OS version is required) , i feel the urge to upgrade my hardware. If the rumor is true I'd better go straight buy a new mac and sell PC.

Yes, it's an interesting future ahead of us... Keeps me thinking too. With all the investments to Apple hardware that's gone obsolete in the past years I'm not very inclined to pour more money in their purses. BUT if that's what it comes down to with the CPU business then I'll have to suck it up and bite the bullet as well. We'll see. But I hope you get your sleep sorted before that, two years probably still in between. :)

nailed it! However the solution was the other way around, first I reset BIOS to its default settings, tried to boot up Windows but still can't shut it down, it's weird! but that reassured me that this is a hardware issue, then i unplugged external GPU, tried again, still not working. I unplugged all jumper switches, memories, USB 3.0 plug, BIOS battery then put them back, in particular, changed the memories to different slots. Finally Windows can be shutdown! then i tried Hackintosh, voila, shutdown and sleep work like a charm.:headbang:

Bravo, congrats! I wouldn't have thought of that but it goes to show that almost anything can be the culprit to these problems.
