pastrychef's Asus ROG Strix Z370-G Gaming (WI-FI AC) build w/ i9-9900K + AMD 6600 XT

pastrychef,
Have you received your AMD Vega graphics card, yet? I'm also curious as to your source for the card because the RX and Vega cards cost an arm and leg.

BTW, my Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8GB graphics card works like a champ in MyHero II build. I just wish these miners would go away so the prices of the RX 580 and Vegas would return to normal prices. Sigh...

Hey up. I see some have been experiencing issues around sleeping. I am seeing an intermittent issue whereby the computer restarts itself when left by itself to sleep - can happen quite quickly (like just now) or can be fine for some time equally, so seems to be random.

When I have put it into sleep mode manually myself, this doesn't seem to be an issue.

I am running HS 10.13.3 and .102 of the web drivers.

Appending the system log from the latest boot message, in case anyone can see anything..

I can't see what's causing your sleep issues in the console log. As far as I can tell everyone has sleep/wake working with he Strix Z370-g when using the latest EFI folder in post #1.

DOCBJR is having issues with an ASRock motherboard.
Haven't heard back from joesph23.

The usual things should be checked:
If you are overclocking. Try running at stock speeds.
Make sure you have CPU power management set up correctly.
Make sure you have USB set up correctly.

I've been sitting at my door waiting for the UPS guy all morning...

I found a Vega 56 on sale for $800 on www.superbiiz.com but they ran out of stock very quickly.

I sold my old GTX 1080 on eBay and managed to walk away with about $550 from the sale to help offset the cost of the new Vega card. Still costly but much more manageable than paying the entire $800...

My AMD Vega 56 finally arrived. As expected, its OpenGL performance in macOS trails Nvidia by a large margin. Unfortunately, I am unaware of an Metal/Metal 2 benchmarks where I expect AMD to do much better.

However, OpenGL benchmarks don't really tell the story. AMD's UI smoothness is infinitely better than Nvidia. I had been using Nvidia cards for so long, I'd forgotten how smooth the UI should be. While I was aware of the micro stutters in the UI, especially when going to and from full screen mode, I'd gotten used to it. With the Vega 56, it's nonexistent! The webGL water test was also silky smooth, no micro stutters at all!

Yes, the well documented fan speed issue is real. Hopefully, Apple releases 10.13.4 soon which is rumored to have the issue fixed.

FakeSMC GPU sensors don't appear to work with this Vega card. No GPU temps, no GPU fan readings.

Overall, I think I made the right decision to switch to AMD. Essentially, I'm betting that Apple will do a better job at getting AMD cards working well in macOS than Nvidia will with their cards. I think that's where the smart money should be headed.

Hello Pastrychef
I think Windows installation was the problem. I replace whole EFI , disconnect OS X drive. Then I install windows on the other drive. Connect again OS X disk and now all is working properly.thanks for your help again.
I have also question about your new Radeon card. It will be work with 4K display? I’m thinking about change my gpu but I have 4K display and need to be working with 60 Hz.
Greetings

That's great to hear.

Yes, both Nvidia and AMD cards are capable of running 4K displays at 60Hz over DisplayPort. The only time you may run in to problems is when you use HDMI.

Thanks for your answer. You using native resolution or scaled? It will works scaled? All Vega cards will work or just specific models?
