I have been using nVidia graphics cards with Photoshop and hackintoshes since Snow Leopard, currently a 970 all updated to the latest/greatest version of High Sierra. In my experience there has been a gradual deterioration of stability with successive versions of OSX and the nVidia driver when using Photoshop such that I am being forced to use Windows for extended sessions to avoid aggravation in OSX.

Problems include inconsistent/changing desktop background colors, slow/choppy redraws in GPU assisted tasks (these markedly improved by turning down or off GPU based acceleration), and similar issues in commercial plug-ins that utilize the GPU, particularly those in which GPU functions can not be manually tuned. Since turning down/off GPU acceleration in Photoshop CC improves function the nVidia driver would seem to be the problem.

Based on monitoring during OSX use CPU and RAM seem to be functioning properly and I do not experience major glitches using OSX for other tasks, the only thing I have not done is optimize the number of USB 3 ports because that and iMessage are not of any concern to me. File sizes range from less than 24mb to occasionally a gigabyte, generally around 200mb, with the same issues regardless of file size.

The same video card/computer booted into Windows shows optimal performance at identical tasks/software with all GPU accelerated functions so the GPU does not seem to be the problem. I installed the CUDA drivers in OSX as well which made no difference. The nVidia drivers otherwise seem to work well in OSX driving a 4k and 2k monitor simultaneously with no hiccoughs other than when using Photoshop and plug-ins.

I get that nVidia is doing the Hackintosh community a great favor simply by issuing the driver but that does not mean they are expending much effort to optimize the code like they constantly do for Windows. Are there tweaks than can improve nVidia driver performance or is this just another one-off Hackintosh issue?

Don't use another app that uses the graphics card while using Photoshop. For me, Photoshop is working well, but gets incredibly sluggish when using at the same time LibreOffice with OpenCL turned on. Just moving a layer around becomes annoyingly slow. The same might be true when using Chrome or Firefox with hardware acceleration turned on, depending on the content displayed.
