First off, I'm new to hackintoshes and know next to nothing (although I get the general concept). I wanted to use a optiplex 780 with 16gb of ram, but I was going to upgrade the cpu to a Xeon E5450 ( I know its 771 and the mobo has a 775 socket, but I was going to get one of the modded ones), but I don't know if that will prevent me from hackintoshing it. Help? Its the mid tower by the way. Also, my only mac is an imac g5, could I install mac os X using that and then update it? I'd highly appreciate any help.

What os could it run? Should I buy the pc? Its quite cheap and need an answer quick

Don't be in a hurry to buy just because of a low price. Take time to do your research first to determine if it will actually work for you or not. The 780 can work with many versions OS X / macOS. It's not the easiest pre-built to hackintosh, the two easiest are the HP 8200 and 8300 models. There are detailed guides on this site for installing Sierra on those. If you are already set on the Optiplex 780 then look at the guides on the InsanelyMac website. Read those and determine if that's the route you want to go for your first attempt. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/312656-guide-macos-sierra-1012-dell-optiplex-780-760-755-790-990/page-1?hl=+optiplex +780 That guide is not newbie friendly so you'd have a learning curve with the 780. One note: if you want to get support here you must follow our rules and only get macOS Sierra or High Sierra from the Mac App Store. We don't allow downloading macOS from anywhere else. A working Mac or Hackintosh is required to download Sierra /High Sierra. A G5 Mac will not be able to do that.

Hmm. Is it much harder to hackintosh the 780? I can get a hp elite 8300 for double the price, but is the elite the same as the one you mentioned?

Yes, it's the same. I've got one with an i5-3470 and it works perfectly with Sierra. Haven't upgraded to HS but I'm certain that it will also work. As I said previously go to IM website and look at their guide. Then look at the 8300 guide here and determine which one you can follow and implement based on your level of knowledge and experience.

See the link in my signature for the HP 6300 Pro mini-tower. It's nearly identical hardware wise to the 8300.

Would the 771 to 775 mod make it harder too?

No idea, I've never attempted that. It would be much smarter to use a Core 2 Quad CPU instead of a Xeon anyway.
