GC-ALPINE RIDGE in hands

I don't think I've seen the device tree error before. But I have seen the alloc type 2 error. That usually happens for me if I try using Intel Graphics instead of Nvidia, but it may be random - it would successfully boot after a few tries. Maybe you need to use a different aptiofix driver, or some other memory fix driver or option.

The log should work when you have a successful boot. The first line might be "kernel:
memory_actual: 0x80000000" but the "Darwin Kernel Version" line should be in the first 10 lines.

Check the pci device list in the Clover boot log. I don't think you'll find anything wrong there. You can check the devtree and pci commands in the EFI Shell. Those should also be reasonable.

Progress! I tried turning off Inject Intel, which led to a massive crash. Had to boot from another EFI, possibly due to NVRAM corruption?

I then disabled Internal Graphics in the BIOS and got to boot into High Sierra with my original config.plist (still have pci=1 added, but that's the only change)! :) The Thunderbolt Dock and the attached TB Drive do not show and no drivers show in the profiler. I don't see any in the IORegistryExplorer either. I did find a few threads online that use .aml and .dsl patches. Tried putting them in the ACPI/patched folder, but that didn't work. I'll have to do a little reading to find out how to install these correctly, as this is most likely user error.

Interestingly, piping the DP out of the GTX1080, through the DP IN 1 of the Alpine Ridge, and then out via HDMI works like a charm.

Thank you @joevt! I now have a running chance at finding config parameters that will work.

Boot into Windows to make sure the devices are working there. Then boot into Clover (warm boot), use the EFI Shell to make sure the devices are still there in the pci list or dev tree (or just check the Clover boot log).

A Thunderbolt chip has two DisplayPort 1.2 inputs, two Thunderbolt outputs (DisplayPort alt mode, HDMI 1.4 alt mode, USB 3.1 gen 2), and a DisplayPort 1.2 output (with dual-mode which means the DisplayPort port also supports single-link DVI / HDMI).

The HDMI port of the GC-ALPINE RIDGE is using the DisplayPort dual-mode of the DisplayPort 1.2 output. Having it as a DisplayPort output might be more useful (can be used as DisplayPort or HDMI with a passive adapter), but also more confusing (because of the other DisplayPort ports as inputs) and redundant (because you can get DisplayPort from the Thunderbolt ports).

The question is, does the Thunderbolt chip convert DP to HDMI, or is it just passing an HDMI signal from the graphics card's DisplayPort ports (because they support dual-mode)? I think it's probably the latter. If the graphics card was outputting HDMI from it's DisplayPort port, then there won't be any DPCD information (which you can see in Linux when using Intel graphics).

A Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort adapter probably uses one of the Thunderbolt ports as the input, the other Thunderbolt port for the first output, and the DisplayPort output as the second output.

A Thunderbolt 3 to Dual HDMI 1.4 adapter would be setup the same way and would use the DisplayPort's dual-mode, and the Thunderbolt's USB-C HDMI alt mode.

A Thunderbolt 3 to Dual HDMI 2.0 adapter would be setup as using DisplayPort outputs with two DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 converters.

Hello, I've got an issue, i choose a GA-270x K5 for my hackintosh because I misunderstood the Gigabyte site, and I just discover that I need to purchase a GC-ALPINE RIDGE to have Thunderbolt. It's really important for me because I'm a editor and my medias are on my Thunder 2 Quad by akitio.
I need to know if it's work fine and if it's easy to install. I don't need to plug a monitor on it just my Thunder 2 Quad.
Thanks again Alex

OS High Sierra or Sierra (the most stable for you)
Gigabyte AORUS - GA-Z270X-Gaming K5
Intel Core i7 7700K (4,2 GHz)
Kingston A400 240 Go
MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X - 11 Go
Be Quiet Dark Rock 3
Be Quiet Silent Base 800
Corsair RM650x - 650W
Corsair Vengeance LED RED DDR4 2 x 16 Go 2666 MHz CAS 16
Apple Adapter Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2/1

I would use the latest macOS, High Sierra.

The GC-ALPINE RIDGE product page says it works with the Z270X-Gaming K5 motherboard, so you shouldn't have any more trouble than anyone else with a GC-ALPINE RIDGE card, which is to say there might be some trouble but there are probably things you can do to make it work if there is trouble (Windows motherboard firmware, Windows Thunderbolt driver, Windows Thunderbolt firmware, BIOS Thunderbolt options, make it work in Windows first, connect your Thunderbolt device and turn it on before startup, etc.).

Thanks for your answer, I saw you have a Z170X Gaming 7, I can change my motherboard for this one, could you tell me if it's work great for this configuration :
OS High Sierra
Intel Core i7 7700K (4,2 GHz)
Kingston A400 240 Go
MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X - 11 Go
Be Quiet Dark Rock 3

Apple Adapter Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) vers Thunderbolt 2/1

and the GIGABYTE Z170X-Gaming 7

I really need the Thunderbolt 3.

I would prefer the Thunderbolt 3 of the GC-ALPINE RIDGE, because it has two DisplayPort inputs that let you use AMD or Nvidia graphics as the source for Thunderbolt displays or Thunderbolt display adapters or USB-C display adapters. It has two DisplayPort inputs to support two 4K displays or one 5K display. The built in Thunderbolt of the Z170X Gaming 7 only supports one 4K display from Intel graphics only. The Z170X Gaming 7 does not have full support of the GC-ALPINE RIDGE. I would go with the latest generation motherboard anyway (Z370), if I were building a new PC.
The motherboards compatible with the GC-ALPINE RIDGE are listed at
http://www.gigabyte.in/Motherboard/GC-ALPINE-RIDGE-rev-10#ov
I suppose motherboards from other manufacturers that have a Thunderbolt add-in card header may also be compatible.

Thanks again I just order a GC-ALPINE RIDGE and follow your advice, now I'm hoping for the best. I'll come back when it's working for update my situation.
Thanks Alex

Hi,

I just got a GC-ALPINE RIDGE card (for UA Apollo) and got it working on Windows, but then I didn't get it working on 10.13.1. But..

I tried many tricks in this - and other threads. Only one working was: i removed windows drive, started UA apollo on BIOS screen and it worked like a charm.

I know it seems to be impossible to do hotswapping but is there any better solution to boot TB devices than running to an apollo in every startup?

Thanks for your advice, do I need to install Windows for installing Thunderbolt Driver or no it will work without drivers ?
Or I must install Windows then install the driver and remove windows ?

You had os X installed already?

With my "experience" I would start with:

1. Insert a card with THB_C cable to the PCI 4x slot. (Lowest PCI slot on 270X Gaming K5)
2. Startup to bios and Enable Thunderbolt stuff in Peripherals window, security to "no secure" etc..
3. save & exit
4. during BIOS screen power up TB devices
5. Let us know what happened :)
