Hi guys,

I´m currently thinking about upgrading my 2013 setup, but I´m not sure the performance boost is worth the price.
I mainly use my Hackintosh for AE and Premiere Pro, so getting better video editing performance is my main reason for a potential upgrade.

Currently I have:
• Intel Core i7 4770K
• ASUS MAXIMUS VII RANGER
• NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780
• 32 GB of RAM

I´m thinking about getting:

• Intel i7 7700K

By itself a small upgrade from the 4770K, but needed if I get an upgraded MB with 64GB capacity.

• Asus ROG Maximus Hero X or IX
Needed for 64GB capacity. Not sure if "X" is compatible yet.

• Geforce GTX 1080 ti or Geforce GTX 1080
As I understand it, PP is able to use the faster GPU. AE isn´t.

• DDR4 64gb
Faster and more RAM. Not working much with 4K or larger formats yet, but should also provide better performance for 1080 footage/projects.

"Is it worth it?" is of course a hard question to answer, so here is my benchmark:
• Will I FEEL a SIGNIFICANT real-world boost in performance (faster rendering, processing etc) ?

I don´t care about academic specs, having the latest and fastest chip etc - I care about actual, real-world performance.

The upgrade will run me appr. 1,900- 2,400 USD depending on which parts I pick, so I´m only doing this to keep my machine up-to-date and give it a significant performance boost.

Your inputs will be much appreciated, so please let me hear your take on this - and if you have comments or alternative suggestions to the parts I listed.
All the best,
Lasse :)

personally, i don't think the upgrade is worth doing

maybe upgrade the video card though?

Hey @feartech

Thanks!
I was just researching some more, and actually came to the same conclusion/question.
As far as I can tell, the DDR3/DDR4 RAM difference will be negligible, and the 4770K > 7700K CPU upgrade will yield a 5-10% boost at best.

[CORRECTION:]
I just checked Userbenchmark.com, and it seems there´s a bigger jump than I realized.
http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7700K-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4770K/3647vs1537

Perhaps this isn´t relevant for AE/PP usage?

If the CPU is upgraded, a new MB is needed since my Ranger VII doesn´t support the 7700K.
If neither RAM nor CPU is upgraded, there´s no need for a new MB.

So, I your opinion, a powerful GPU will help performance in both AE and PP, or only PP?
Or what do you think about upgrading CPU and GPU? Or will that also be a waste of money?

if you really want to upgrade, then why not check out the coffee lake processors?

Yeah, the 8700K was off my radar, but now it´s definitely on it :)
Only downside to upgrading CPU is the fact that I seem to be forced to also change MB and RAM (the 7700 and 8700 don´t work on my current MB AFAIK), so it´s either a full upgrade or nothing at all. But the 8700K looks like an awesome upgrade, and the tests I´ve seen show that it delivers massive speed increases in both AE and PP over the 7700K (and of course over my older 4770K).

One last thing: Has anyone been able to make the 8700K work flawlessly - or will installing it be a major hassle, do you know?
Thanks again!

OK, so far I´ve decided to go for this setup.
Please let me know if any of you think this will work or create (m)any issues.
Also: Which CPU fan is better for the 8700K?
(Not interested in water cooling)

• Intel i7 8700K

• CPU fan:

Considering the Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 3 or just Dark Rock 3 (smaller formfactor), or perhaps stick to my Cooler Master Hyper 212, or something 4th. Ideas and thoughts are welcome.

• ASUS Turbo Geforce GTX 1080 ti (heat out the back)

• ASUS ROG Maximus Code X (w/ Bluetooth and Wifi)
I´ve read posts where ppl claim the all-in-one wifi/BT/MB creates interference. Please let me know if you have input.

• Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RAM 64gb
- I got 32GB on my DDR3 MB currently. Ill begin with 32GB and see if I even need 64GB later.
