Radeon Compatibility Guide - ATI/AMD Graphics Cards

Hi! Now I am in AMD club. I've switched from GTX 980 to RX 580 on high sierra.
After update to high sierra, nvidia performance was very very slow. Chrome browser was epically slow.

I've bought RX 580 and had to update bios on my motherboard, because PC just didn't boot. After bios update and with MacPro6,1 smbios, lilu and with whatevergreen kexts all works perfectly!

I have two 4k displays, both connected by Display Port. Performance is very very high! Apps that were slow on Nvidia now fly on 60fps.

What process did you go through to make the switch? I have 1080 and am trying to switch to an AMD but so far, I can’t get my system to boot.

I think starting point is important. I did update from working sierra to high sierra.
Then I updated nvidia drivers without any problem.

When I've decided switch to AMD, I've done following:

1. Uninstall Nvidia drivers (Click at "uninstall" button on nvidia preferences panel)
2. Add Lilu and WhateverGreen kext. I've downloaded last version of these kext from github.
3. Add these kexts to /kext/Other folder on EFI partition.
4. Change SMBIOS from 14,2 to 6,1, add nv_disable=1, Inject Kexts = YES (System Parameters tab)
5. Updated motherboard bios
6. In bios I've choosed only PCI videos

So, that's all. I've attached my config.plist, try it.

Thanks, very helpful!
When you added the AMD card, you were running High Sierra already or you did it before the update?

Any other AMD kexts in your setup?

I feel like I’m really close but am missing something simple. If I put my Nvidia back with no drivers installed, it boots. Swap it with the AMD 580 (with lilu and whatevergreen), it hangs. It’s like it’s trying to initialize the card but fails.

Despite my best efforts my system stubbornly refuses to boot
:banghead:

The kexts appear to be the same as everyone else’s system that work - newest versions of Lilu and Whatevergreen
I tried copying the config.plist of working systems
Changed to SMBIOS 6,1
Ripped out what little hair I have left
Did shots of Vodka
Disabled internal graphics
Uninstalled the Nvidia Drivers
Did more Vodka shots (didn’t help but I felt better)
Pulled out my credit card and browsed the Apple website for iMacs

My only clue seems to be Lilu shows several errors when booting. In the fine print (attached) it says ‘disabled on unsupported operating system’ and ‘...failed to start.’ I also see an NvidiaFixup kext that was deleted from my EFI loading.

So is the AMD solution compatible right now with the latest version of High Sierra...Build 17A405? And/or am I doing something wrong?

Or do I need to drink more??

The latest version of High Sierra should work almost perfectly with RX480/580 using lilu and whatever green kexts.

May I suggest a clean install?

Well the first 2 lines def seems to be the problem to me but I have no solution for you mate.
I noticed there's a thread on Github but again no solution: https://github.com/vit9696/Lilu/issues/10
I skip the drinking part but also browse for iMacs when **** goes bad mate ;)
osx86 can feel rock stable but other times it's so fragile you don't even dare to take the next step.
I am sure someone here will have a solution though since this doesn't seem like big issue, just something you've missed along the way.
Good luck!

Ugg, I’m stuck. Trying to switch to an XFX RX580 from a 1080TI.

High Sierra 10.13 hangs on boot in black screen. Added the lilu and whatevergreen kexts. MacPro 6,1.

Does this work with 10.13 latest version? Not sure what to try next.

I was hoping it would be easier than fixing the Nvidia problems but so far about the same.

The XFX branded AMD cards are known to cause issues you may need to flash it with another branded firmware not really sure I would avoid XFX branded AMD cards at all costs just to avoid the issues the community has reported with them there is a little bit spoken about the known issue in the first post of this thread

Have you tried with the boot flag -lilubetaall to force lilu to load that is the reason the graphics aren't initializing also can you get us your clover boot log and where exactly do you have lilu and whatevergreen from the looks of it you have them directly installed and not in EFI/Clover/kexts/other which is wrong they should be injected via boot loader(Clover)

can someone suggest which brand of vega 64 works oob ? xfx, gigabyte saphire strix? which is the best option here
