Hi there,
Last week I was as able to score and receive Sapphire RX Vega 56 on Amazon for 399 $ by following tracking stocks web site. When card arrived final version of High Sierra was not published. There were few days left....
So i first tried with beta and everything worked well, sleep mode finally 100% perfect (even on 980ti it was not perfect) so I was really happy until I tried to export video with h.264 in FCX. I was getting error right away. I hoped that final release will fix this and after few days I was on final and I had same issue. From that moment I tried EVERYTHING but with no success. Pro res rendering was working fine, except h.264 which I use.
Finally today after few days and 30+ reinstalls and who knows what, I even flashed RX 56 to RX 64 but nothing changed. I tried with or without WhateverGreen.kext and Lilu.kext no difference.
Each time it would crash on the beginning. Also Chrome was crashing randomly freezing the system.
I tried changing SMBIOS 14.2, 17.1 nothing helped....
until I just did this
SMB_BIOS_VERSION "IM191.88Z.0058.B00.1705091711"
SMB_PRODUCT_NAME "iMac19,1"
SMB_BOARD_PRODUCT "Mac-CF21D135A7D34AA6"
and I changed product name to Imac19.1, setup board product and bios version and reboot and that was it........
H.264 export works ))))
I did the test, same 4k clip (1 minute 58 seconds) with same system h.264 rendering:
980 TI - 10 minutes 29 sec
RX Vega 56 w 64 bios - 9 minutes 47 seconds
I think it is still not optimized since I was getting 13 C lower CPU temp (around 61 C on i6700k with RX Vega and the card also was working almost in idle with only one led light on and the ultra quite mode with fan spinning in low comparing with 980ti where with same system and cpu temp was around 75C with full speed fan on CPU and GPU.
Not bad for the start, but at least this is solved since i couldn't`fine anyone even speaking about this issue anywhere
also tried Bruce test with 20 seconds vs 13 sec which I was getting with 14.2 & high sierra beta, so it looks it is slower but at least works now
also Chrome is not freezing anymore after this at least for last 2 hours since I did it with YT on...
