Guide: Update Directly to macOS High Sierra (APFS)
...

I updated directly using these steps and was successful eventually in loading 10.13, however, my SSD was not converted to APFS, it has remained HFS+.

My SSD is a 960 EVO NVMe.

My question is why didn't it update automatically like everyone else? And can I update to APFS without doing a fresh install?

Try it with disable Trim on SSD before. After that reboot into Recovery Partition and convert to APFS.

I just tried this. I disabled trim in terminal and booted into recovery mode. The option for convert to APFS is greyed out on my 960 EVO and also my 850 EVO which I use as a backup drive. Strangely enough it isn't greyed out for my Seagate SSHD. Not that I would want to convert that to APFS anyway.

For what reason won't it let me convert?

Do you have APFS.efi in your EFI-Clover-drivers64UEFI?

Yes of course I do. Could that file be corrupt or not working though?

I just tried unmounting and nothing changed. Tried also a combination of unmounting and remounting.
After un mounting, you should be able to Convert to APFS from the edit menu (I had exactly the same issue, hfs+ not APFS, fixed now).

I don't think so. When in Recovery try to unmount 1st, like Brachiator suggested here -> Oct 1, 2017 at 8:16 PM

Okay.. After deleting and re-adding the APFS.efi, rebooting into Recovery Mode and unmounting the drive I can convert to APFS. However, it fails and throws up this error.

Actually it can be incompatible. DO NOT use a downloaded apfs.efi or one from a beta version of macOS High Sierra, they actually differ. Get apfs.efi from the macOS installer that you downloaded

Ok I did that. I got the APFS.efi from my macOS installer that I downloaded and replaced the other old one.

Try formatting the entire SSD, don't just click on a partition

Okay when I select the drive (and not the partition), convert to APFS stays greyed out. Only when I select the partition does it become available. I'm confused. Maybe the computer gods don't want me to upgrade for some reason :p..
