[solved] Really slow start-up 5-6 mins always

Not open for further replies.
I know that the new SSDT-GFX0 is part of the problem as when I went back to the old version, I was able to startup.

"I have just added Support to post_install_nvidia_graphics for High Sierra Audio. SSDT-GFX0 has Pin configs. No need to use CloverALC."

Was I supposed to remove AppleALC? Lilu?

As mentioned before, things appear to be running fine, it just takes a long time to startup.

Thanks and regards

You have not followed the guide. Config.plist is not post_install_nvidia_graphics. Follow the guide carefully. Attach all Problem reporting files once done. AppleHDA.kext in L/E. is not needed. Pinconfigs are all done via the SSDT. Follow the guide carefully. Cant expect things not to work if you dont follow the guide.

Config.plist is not post_install_nvidia_graphics. - You are correct. My computer wouldn't startup using post_install_nvidia_graphics so I had to revert to my modified version so I could get my computer to startup. I did post a screenshot of the verbose output where it got stuck.

I will take another look at your notes. I must have neglected a step.

With appreciation...

SSDT-GFX0 must be paired with post_install_nvidia_graphics also dont forget to rename post_install_nvidia_graphics to config.plist. Copy your current values from your original config to post_install_nvidia_graphics use Xcode or Plistedit Pro. Attach all problem reporting files if any problems.

1) I did try using your updated SSDT-GFX0 with post_install_nvidia. I did change the name to config. All I changed was the SMBIOS info using Plistedit Pro. When I tried starting up, it froze here:

2) Copy your current values from your original config - Other values than SMBIOS?

3) One thing I noticed in yours is you have "Enable TRIM for SSD" DISABLED- I have this done at the system level. Shouldn't affect things though.

4)
For Audio,
SSDT-Hack has pinconfig for ALC892. No need to use realtekALC or any AppleHDA injector. Use RehabMans CodeCommander to fix No Audio from sleep.

ALC892 AppleHDA (#1 of 4) - (#4 of 4)
- I am using Toleda's newest way which is through AppleALC and Lilu. Should I remove those kexts and try again?

From Toleda - C. AppleALC/AppleALC: Native macOS HD audio
  1. Add config.plist/Boot/Arguments/ -lilubeta -alcbeta

5) A mistake on my end is that yours has custom UUID set to false when mine should be True with values. Not sure that would cause the freeze though. I can try again and see.

What I don't remember is if there was the Legacy Shim freeze when I used your plist.

As I mentioned, my computer currently starts up fine, sound works, last I checked power was fine too using your old SSDTGFX0.

The only hassle is that it takes 5-6 minutes to get to a login screen.

One other person has reported problems similar to mine. I will keep testing on my end in hopes of getting my rig to start up using your new SSDT and Config file.

Thanks for your guidance so far. If I figure anything out I will let you know.

Just a quick note, I get this as well. For now it doesnt bother me as my hang is for only around 40 second, not long enough to go chasing up the problem. Also I don't wish to risk breaking a fully working setup - What I may try is disabling each piece of hardware on its own (e.g. disable appleALC, then try disabling Whatevergreen) until I find the culprit. Sorry I don't have any assistance to offer, but be glad your not the only one with the Legacy Shim 2: stall. If I manage to solve my hang, and it appears related to a similar piece of hardware or configuration to what you have (e.g. appleALC related for example) I'll come back and tell you what it was.

VioletDragon - Success! I have been able to startup using your SSDT-GFX0 and post_install_nvidia_graphics. I did update some of the SMBIOS values on it but didn't change anything else. Thank you for your help!

The last thing I have to figure out is why my computer gets stuck on HID: Legacy shim 2 for about 3 minutes everytime I start up. I can see there is disk access going on during that time.

Thanks again for your help, sincerely appreciated.

I agree it is related to a piece of hardware (or several). At the beginning I was removing all my USB devices and the number of Legacy went from 6 to 1. Maybe it is 40 seconds per device as my stall is about 3 mins. I tried disconnecting all my USB devices during startup but it didn't help.

I noticed that there is drive access going on so maybe it is checking my Windows drive or my external HD.

If I figure out anything I will post here too.

I can tell its not being stalled by the checking the mechanical hard drive, as my case hdd led is connected to the hard drive only, and the PCI-E SSD card is not as it has its own activity leds, like a network card, thus I can see the PCI-E going nuts during the hang (can see its LED through the case window), then the hard drive gets accessed (Storage volume, HFS+) and the boot progresses quickly after that to the login screen.

I don't seem to be able to change the number regardless of if I unplug everything usb except the keyboard and mouse, or have the entire flight deck hooked up (instruments, rudder, yoke and throttle) - effectively every usb port has something plugged in, even a type C usb stick. Thus it doesn't appear USB is causing the stall either.

Interesting, I am on APFS, are you too? I am figuring it has something to do with it.

I might try removing USB items to see if it shortens the lag.

I'm almost CERTAIN the hang is apfs related. Once I make a backup, I'm going to format my disk with HFS+ and clone the backup back to the disk to see if that nukes the pause. I'm cloning with CCC now to my mechanical. I'll then boot from this and do the format and see if that eliminates the hang when I boot from the SSD again. (the bootloader on the SSD will not be affected by a format as its a different, hidden partition, unless mounted deliberatly, as one can do with EFI mounter or Clover Configurator.)

Just cloning back from the spinning platter to the SSD now formatted in hfs+ - I forgot how PAINFULLY slow spinning disks were to use as boot media LOL!

edit: That did it - the Legacy Shim 2: freeze is a result of apfs - changing my disk back to HFS+ got me back to a 5 second boot time with no hangs! :)
