5K Resolution (5120x2880) via NVIDIA Drivers on Dell UltraSharp 27" Monitor

Yes, when you use a bogus framebuffer or connect the DP cables in the wrong order, these hiccups with flickering may appear and stay for a while.

Dell has this even stated on their official support page:

Screen Flicker

Flicker on screen may occur right after the symptom of split screen or distorted video happens.

To resolve this issue, unplug and plug back in the AC power cord from the display to recover from flickering screen. Once you return to a normal screen image, leave the monitor on for 1 hour to let the residual voltage stabilize in the panel. The flicker will be eliminated.
This happened a lot to me. I was surprised to see it stabilize while it took so long.

Why are some people here not recommending this monitor, for Hackintosh ?
Is that the same ( issues ? ) with all the 5k monitors, with Hackintosh ?
Thank you

Some 4K and all current 5K displays require MST. MST means that the display takes two streams: one for the left and one for the right half of the screen. For 4K, the two streams can be transmitted over one DisplayPort 1.2 connection. For 5K, the two streams need to be transmitted over two DisplayPort 1.2 cables, or one Thunderbolt 3 cable.

Nvidia drivers on macOS do not support MST well. First of all, you need to set a boot argument:
nv_spanmodepolicy=1

Even then, when your computer boots, you may have to turn off the Dell 5K and turn it back on to get it to switch automatically to 5K resolution.

I don't think anyone's gotten the LG 5K to work from Nvidia. You need a two DisplayPort input Thunderbolt 3 addin card for this, like the GC-ALPINE RIDGE.

I'm not sure about the HP Z27q 5K display. I can't find a report of anyone getting it to work with Nvidia in macOS.

The macOS Nvidia driver has another problem with MST displays where the cursor on the right half of the screen may be different than the cursor on the left hand of the screen.

The macOS AMD drivers are less crappy, and therefore do not have those problems. Of course, Windows drivers work best.

I'm not sure about Intel graphics.

Okay, i will have to " skip " a 5k monitor, I'd go for an iMac 27" 5k
I have a question, maybe someone could help me with this : i'm using my PC + 55 inches 4k TV, 90 % for gaming.
My soundcard is Creative X7 + headphones Shure 1540
Would be a possibility to connect the soundcard with the PC and with the iMac ? When i use the iMac, i would really like to use my soundcard / headphones
Here are some specs about Creative X7

I dunno. I couldn't find an online manual for the X7. It's kind of (or a lot) off topic. Your PC has inputs and outputs. Your Mac will have inputs and outputs. The X7 has inputs and outputs. Your headphones requires an output. Are there sufficient number of inputs/outputs to connect them altogether? The X7 needs to be able to switch the input from the Mac to a PC (iPad app?). It looks like the X7 has only one of each kind of input, so you need to use a different input kind for the Mac and PC, or use an external switch. Actually, it may allow two Bluetooth inputs but only one will work at a time.

The iMac 2017 doesn't seem to have the TOSLINK output capability like the previous iMacs had? So for digital audio, you need to use the USB connection or Bluetooth. Then the PC would use Optical In or Bluetooth.

Thank you, joevt
What do you think about a 4k monitor 32 inches ( 137 ppi ) vs iMac 27" 5k ( 217 ppi ) ? I mean ONLY the text / fonts.
Would it look on the 4k monitor 32 inches almost the same as good as the iMac 27" 5k ?
Thank you

A bigger monitor might be nice even if it has fewer pixels. I still use an Apple 30" Cinema display (2560 x 1440 not Retina) next to my Dell UP2715K. On a 32 inch 4K screen, I would consider using a HiDPI mode greater than 2560 x 1440, such as 3200 x 1800 which draws into a 6400 x 3600 frame buffer and scales down to 3840 x 2180. I think it will look fine and you won't notice the less sharp lines from normal viewing distance.

Hi, i'm using a mac pro 5.1 with a Nvidia gtx 1060 and a up2715k. The display is recognized as two separate displays with the resolutions 2560x1880 and 2560x1440. What can i do?

Did you set the nvram boot args? For El Capitan:
Code:
sudo nvram boot-args="nvda_drv=1 nv_spanmodepolicy=1"
http://www.macvidcards.com/blog/the-5k-report

For Sierra, nvda_drv is a separate nvram parameter which is set by the NVIDIA Driver Manager preferences panel when you select the NVIDIA Web Driver:
Code:
sudo nvram boot-args="nv_spanmodepolicy=1"
sudo nvram nvda_drv=1

Once you boot into macOS, you may need to turn off the display for 3 seconds, then turn it on for 5K to be initialized.

GUYS, I think I fixed the mouse pointer bug (not really fixed, but workaround). I used my hackintosh for 3 days and the bug didn't occur once.

Optional:
1. Disabled the shake pointer to find
2. Hot corner for shutdown/screensaver (This second I think it's totally useless but still).

What I have installed:
1. High Sierra 17A405 and web drivers 378.10.10.10.15.117, so latest build of both
2. Lilu.kext, NvidiaGraphicsFixup.kext, NVWebDriverLibValFix.kext
3. SMBIOS iMac 17,1
4. nVidia GTX 1060 with 3 DP. I have 2DP connected to the monitor. the 3rd DP is connected to the monitor at the mDP input.

What I do at startup:
1. Startup in 4K (mDP input), so I have POST BIOS, I choose macOS, I reach the login.
2. Switch to 5K, and power cycle the monitor to get 5K Login screen.
3. IMPORTANT, I switch to 4K again, and login.
4. After I logged in and everything is loaded, I switch to 5K again.

Doing this, I never never experienced the mouse pointer bug. I know it's a pain in the ass, but still.

I have a vanilla install (meaning that everything is loaded at startup by clover), don't know if with multibeast something could be different.
I saw that logging in 5K lead to the pointer bug without any possibility to fix (hot corners, changing res, power off/on the monitor). BUT sometimes the bug didn't occur at startup, and maybe didn't occur at all.
So I just tought that maybe logging in 4K could fix that, and in fact it did.
