Is this problem resolved or still under investigation?
I have very similar symptoms in Sierra 10.12.6.
Attached my problem reporting files.

Backlight control patch is not active.
Rebuild cache and reboot.

Attached after cache rebuilding files.

Thanks for your time.

To complete information. Maybe will be helpful.
If laptop is connected to external monitor by DP, and after press button to wake-up.
On external display there is last visible screen. I can move mouse, but can't click anything.
Keyboard does not work.
It looks like system hangs in time of going to sleep.

At the same time on internal display, there is only black screen. With working backlight during first few sec.

Of course wake-up does not work, independent of connecting to external monitor or not.

How are you initiating sleep?

After some testing, there is little differences
1. Apple logo -> Sleep ->Wait untill wifi and power led indicators off -> power led indicator blinking ->press power button to wake-up -> wifi and power led indicators light -> black screen (internal and external) with working brightness button (only few seconds), hard disk led indicator periodically blinking (only few seconds)
2. Waiting without any activity until finished time setup in Preferences -> Energy savings , situation exactly the same like point 1
3. Closing lid -> wifi and power led indicators never off -> Opening lid:
a/ If laptop connected to external monitor - > on external monitor is last visible screen with possibility to move mouse, but can't
click and do anything (system probably hang because time on the watch is always the same), on internal monitor only black screen
b/ If laptop not connected to external monitor and I connect it - on both displays the same black screen

I suspect this is just the classic problem reported with Broadwell on 10.12.4 and later.
Try with 10.11.x or 10.12.3 if you can.
