Hi all,
I recently bought and assembled a gaming hackintosh using the material on this site. The cooler I chose is the Corsair H60 AIO cooler. This has been my first experience using water cooling, and I'm wondering what the normal temperature response/behaviour is. I've attached a screen recording (animated gif) of a short Prime95 run showing the temperature response of the CPU.
There are several behaviours I find strange:
1) When the CPU load changes in a stepwise way (say from 0% idle to 100% full load), the CPU temperature reported in the OS jumps rapidly over a few seconds (from 35C to 55-60C), and then continues to warm at a much slower rate. I was expecting the temperature to increase much slower (as the water absorbs more of the heat from the CPU).
2) When the CPU load changes in a negative stepwise way (say from 100% full load to 0% idle), the temperature drops rapidly (from 60C to 38) and then slowly cools off to around 35C. I was expecting the temperature to remain higher after the load ceases, and then slowly cool over time as the radiator cools down the water.
It seems like the temperature reported in the OS is from a sensor deep in the CPU, and maybe far from the surface where the water cooler block is. When the OS reports a CPU temperature of 70C, the water cooler block is definitely not at 70C.
The pump speed is fixed at 100% (~4,200 rpm). Stock TIM is used that came applied to the water cooler block. The behaviour is the same with the side of my case on and off. The CPU is not overclocked. I'm using Argus Monitor to control fan speeds from within Windows.
Another annoying consequence of the rapid temperature changes is highly variable radiator fan speeds. When I open a program, the CPU load spikes, causing a temperature increase, which cascades onto the CPU radiator fan speed as an increase.
My hardware setup is:
- CPU: Intel 6700K
- Motherboard: GA-Z170X-Gaming 5
- Cooler: Corsair H60 (with dual Corsair ML120 PRO in push-pull configuration) with stock TIM
- Case: Corsair 460X
Is this what other H60 owners are seeing? Any thoughts/feedback is appreciated.
