Build
This was my first hackintosh attempt. I decided to give it a try after learning my gaming computer was potentially compatible. This started it all for me. I would say I ran into all of the usual problems a newbie would run in to, and there were moments when I was incredibly frustrated. I have experience with Linux so not everything was unfamiliar though. Overall it was a really fun experience to dig in deep and learn some new things. I found troubleshooting is difficult at first, because sometimes you think you fix something with a certain method, and although it might work, its not always for the reason you think it is. For example, my first few times installing were really quite simple. Then I would break things on post install. Just because I got it right 10 times once, doesn't mean it will work right the 11th time you try. Its easy to change something without knowing, which makes you since you broke it with the target you are currently working on like fixing audio or graphics, but it might not be related. Everything in the end has a reason, but sometimes its not the reason you first think.

I also appreciate everyone on the forums and anyone who makes guides. They are invaluable. Some things still require a bit of digging, but its nice to know there are so many other people working on these things too.

Originally, this machine was built to be a gaming machine with windows only on it. I centered on the graphics card instead of CPU and ram. It was meant to be budget friendly as well. I also own a 2015 MacBook Pro Retina as well as a 2011 Mac Mini Server i7. I used my MacBook Pro for pretty much everything. I really love this computer, but it is difficult being attached to it as a main workstation. It keeps me tied down with things like USB hubs when it needs to be free to move. When I discovered the Hackintosh concept, I decided I didn't have anything to lose by loading Mac OS on my gaming computer. This would be convenient because it maximizes its use. I don't like the fact that all it did before was gaming. For home use I don't need anything extreme, but most of what I need is on Mac OS.

My first attempts to install were pretty non commendable. It was interesting though. I didn't want to commit to formatting a hard drive, so I thought to try and install on a USB 3.0 thumb drive I had kicking around instead (I had Linux in mind of course). Sure enough it worked. I was booting Mac OS off of a thumb drive. It was very slow to load, but after things were loaded into ram things really worked fine. This was enough to convince me to move forward, and even purchase a second ssd drive to handle the task correctly.

After getting Mac OS successfully loaded on the SSD, I decided that it wasn't enough because 256gb was an abundance for what I needed it to do for home use with my external drives. So i decided to re-partition and multi-boot the second SSD for linux mint alongside OS X. Now I have the computer set up for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS at the boot of clover.

Guide
All pretty standard for most things.
I used the standard guide on tonymacx86 for the most part. I dont remember all the guides I used for all the little things. But there was nothing all that different.
For iMessage I recommend this one - http://www.fitzweekly.com/2016/02/hackintosh-imessage-tutorial.html?m=1

Whats Working
Pretty much everything.
  • Intel HD 530 - This works with full acceleration and glitch free after applying the standard HD 530 patches.
  • Nvidia GTX 1070 - Didn't work originally when I tried because the Pascal drivers were not available. I thought I was going to have to switch between on-board and discrete every time I switched to windows which was inconvenient. Surprise! Pascal Web Drivers are here!! (I wish I would have known before purchasing an offhand GTX 980 for my other project though LOL)
  • HDMI Audio - This is not tested, but Im pretty sure its recognized and works.
  • Onboard Ethernet - Working as normal with IntelMausiEthernet drivers. Use the latest kext with Kext Beast.
  • Realtek Audio - Everything is recognized by Mac OS, but the motherboard has an issue itself so I cant test full functionality. It doesn't work in windows or Linux either, but is recognized.
  • USB Audio - I have not taken it to studio yet for the full multitrack test, but so a simple usb audio codec is being recognized and used with no problems.
  • USB 3.0 Ports - Works after MultiBeast Increase Port Limit Patch
  • USB 2.0 Header - These work fine.
  • iMessage - Working with the guide above. It has worked several times for me so there shouldn't be issues.
  • Sleep/Wake - This did not work at first. I had to disable it in my power preferences. I tested it again randomly after finishing my Kaby Lake build and it worked. Not sure what I changed exactly but I can look into it if people are having problems with this.
  • Other - I ordered a TP-Link n900 thinking it would work out of the box. However it doesnt fit because of the micro atx size. The GPU is in the way and it would restrict airflow anyway.

I will post further updates as well as pictures and benchmarks as soon as I get this finalized and settled in.

Hi there, I'm trying to copy this build so I have the CPU and motherboard. I have Kingston Hyperx Fury 2*4GB RAM of 2133mhz. But, I haven't been successful in installing the macOS on an SSD. What version of BIOS was on the motherboard at the time? And do you have the config plist to upload so I could possibly compare to see if I have done something wrong? My install freezes on the loading bar before it actually starts the installer.

I will see about getting the config when I have a moment. There were a couple of things I think were particular about the install on this one. If i remember right, the most compatible way I found to get it to work was to use the USB 2.0 for the installer. It made things a little slower, but I remember having boot problems with the installer. Also, are you trying to install it with a GTX graphics card or are you just using onboard? If you can get a screen shot of -v enabled that would be helpful in figuring out what its hanging on. Im pretty sure the bios is updated to the newest version but I will double check.

I managed to figure out the boot problems at the installer, it had to do with having to go into pic and inject usb ownership and inject usb. I was booting from onboard graphics until i ticked hd530 graphics and forgot to put the kext fix in, but used my GTX750ti to boot and that gets around that issue so just going to go straight to installing gfx driver for it. I am going about fine tuning all the kexts, installing wifi card and that stuff. If you could still find your config.plist wouldn't mind taking a look at it for comparison, thanks

I have successfully installed High Sierra on this build and wanted to update the thread while it was still fresh on my mind.

This build had been put to the side for hackintosh, but I have found the need to use this as a home workstation so I decided to revisit. My goal was to install High Sierra from the start, but I ended up having issues that seem related to the problems N-Tosh had been mentioning in previous posts. High Sierra would crash on the loading screen for the install. After several failed attempts I decided to try installing Sierra instead. Everything on the Sierra install went as standard with no issues. I was determined to figure out why High Sierra would not do the same.

I found that for my situation, USBInjectAll.kext was crucial to have along side the USB Inject and FixOwnership flags in clover. I also activated the Fix Header flag based off of another thread, though Im not sure if it was necessary overall.

Some notes on High Sierra

I have finalized on using bios 17,1 for my build. It had the best support for Skylake and was very straight forward getting the HD530 iGPU to work. Just use the MultiBeast HD530 install with the graphics fix and it should work as normal. This is definitely a good bios if you strictly use the HD530. For the GTX 1070, I also had to use the Nvidia graphics fixup in MultiBeast to fix black screen at startup. Everything seems to be working perfectly after those two graphic changes and the system seems well optimized for the Skylake CPU.

Bios 18,2 also works quite well on this build, and seemed to be friendlier with the GTX 1070. With this bios everything with the GTX 1070 seemed to work correctly without the Nvidia graphics fixup. However, It didn't seem to want to play nice with the HD530, even after HD530 fixup and changes. If you don't care to have HD530 working because you are using something discrete, this might be an easier bios to use. However, I opted for 17,1 to have the GTX1070 and the HD530 working as a fall back option if the GTX 1070 web drivers do not load.

Overall everything seems to be working very well. Sierra install seems to work a little more out of the box from UniBeast, but the High Sierra install just needs a couple of extra tweaks. Everything is currently installed on an external USB for testing purposes but I will soon be moving everything to an internal SSD. I also am uncertain about how well the APFS is working for this current setup. Things do not seem to load with any of the preloader options in clover, and there is an extra preloader for the install still lingering over. I don't recall running in to this issue on the Z270 with APFS and High Sierra so I don't know if its an issue. It has done the same with two different install attempts. Filevault and regular option seem to work with no issues however so I'm not worried.
