I borrow my dad's iMac a lot, which scores at 55sec on the BruceX Test. I just want a system that performs better.

So what I need to know is if you (the experts) see any issues with this setup outside of the typical clover boot. Based on my research the 280x is currently the best performing card for FCPX, especially if in CrossFire.

I have access to two 160gb 7200 RPM hard drives. Would you recommend I keep Win10 on my 1tb SSD and install OSX on the 160gb to test it out first?

If it works out, can I buy another 850 EVO and perform a data migration to transfer OSX from the 160gb to the New EVO or does Samsung data migration struggle with OSX?

Is it recommendable I enable NTFS read/write on OSX drive to utilize the 3TB Seagate Drive (file sharing between Win10 and OSX)?

My machine (Running Win10):
MSI X99A SLI KRAIT EDITION ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard
Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor
MSI GeForce GTX 970 4GB Video Card
(Just purchased a XFX R9 280x Double Dissipation Black OC for $50)
64GB RAM
1TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD for OS and storage
Seagate Constellation ES ST33000650NS 3TB 7200 RPM for storage
CPU Cooler - Swiftech H320 X2 Prestige

Thank you for all your insight <3

1. Crossfire does not work on OS X. Leave the connectors on for WIndows, but it does NOT work. It makes no difference on a Mac if you have them on though.

2. If you can, put different Operating Systems on different disks. It makes life so much easier. When you are installing any other OS, remove the connectors to all the other disks. It makes installation easier as you know which disks you are installing to. Many, many people have installed something over the wrong disk, myself inclused.

3. You can use something like Carbon Copy Cloner to migrate. We use CCC to backup before any OS upgrade, we have had to restore from the CCC backup more than once. Other software is available. I have no idea about Samsung data migration but would 100% recommend CCC as it works.

4. The only way to get NTFS read/write is to have something like Tuxera NTFS. We have it but never use it.

5. There is a distinct chance your XFX 280X may not work. Of all the 280X cards, these are the most problematic. A lot of people have reported problems with them, some get them to work, some don't. The XFX cards seem to have a lot of different firmware versions.

6. No idea on your MB and CPU as we don't have them. Check there is a golden build for them.

7. Not sure why you have a GTX970 anda 280X in your build. Not a clue how they are going to work together (if at all) with FCPX.

There's lots of stuff about FCPX and 280X on this board, read as much as you can. I'd also be prepared to dump your XFX if it doesn't work. Get a Sapphire or Gigabyte 280X which just work.

First off, thank you so much for your reply. You answered so many of my questions!

I'll follow your storage/NTFS advice. I've read where people use Nvidia when booting Win10 and AMD for OSx.

As for the MB and GPU, it appears the gpu requires a bios flash (not sure what that means but I'll learn lol) and the MB requires some additional tinkering. Im an engineering student but I work with my hands... this computer stuff is a bit above my head. Just want to make videos.

Appreciate your insight :)

If all you want to do is make videos, then keep it simple.

I have also read that some MB's seem to allow different GPU's for booting. I would personally find a single GPU board and stick with it.

XFX cards seem to be very problematic, flashing sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. YMMV.
