LG UltraFine 5K Build

Daisy chain two Alpine Ridge cards.. seems to be an interesting solution!
(I would obviously also need a second GTX 1080, with two more display port outputs)
I still have to read up on whether SLI does work in MacOS.

If SLI does work in macOS and if I can get my hands on two Alpine Ridge cards, i will definitely try that!
SLI not supported in macOS, but you can run 2x graphic cards...

Ok I found the issue for the Apple Thunderbolt : I had to disable the Thunderbolt Boot option in the BIOS. But still not able to finish the macOS loading on the 5k... :/
You should try to enable screen sharing and see if the system is actually crashing or the display is not just turning on. I had that problem, which was just that MacOS was defaulting it to 5k resolution, but the DP cable from gpu to Designare only supports 4k. I got it working by setting the resolution to 4k using the screen sharing.

Sorry I just read the manual - the "daisy port" is simply a different size connector for motherboards with a smaller physical connector. Gigabyte made the cable a one size fits two kinds of motherboard thunderbolt header sizes.

Thanks you for the clarification, Janmansilver!
Thats a bummer, though..

Yes it worked, thanks !... but only with the lowest resolution. Very strange cause my LG 4k works fine at full resolution... I've order the Alpine Ridge card with double-DP1.2... we'll see!

I have the HP screen and there is zero chance you are going to get it to work in the current builds of Sierra. I tried everything. I bought a Dell UP2715K and it worked out of the gate with the noted caveat of keeping the monitor off until macOS loads.
Everything? Did you try overriding the HP EDID with an EDID similar to the Dell? Note that each input of the display has a different EDID with different product ID. For the Dell, there's an override file DisplayProductID-40b6.mtdd with some information about the dual DisplayPort nature of the display. I don't know if that file is required to make it work. Maybe the HP needs a similar file? Actually, the Apple Support document "Using 4K displays, 5K displays, and Ultra HD TVs with your Mac" https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT206587 says it's supported in Sierra but not El Capitan. Maybe Sierra has an mtdd file that El Capitan does not.

There's some notes at:

Looks like people have trouble getting the display to work even on real Macs.

It's, however, still not perfect, as I don't have monitor control, usb hub, speakers and webcam. And also the mouse cursor sometimes changes to the wrong cursor e.g. resize although it still functions fine as an arrow.
Does a program like ControllerMate.app from Ordered Bytes show anything useful about the USB controls or hub? The other devices are either USB or PCIe over Thunderbolt. Does IORegistry list the USB devices or any Thunderbolt devices? Thunderbolt devices need to be plugged in before startup for them to work in Mac OS X. Once you figure out what the devices are, then you can check if Mac OS X has drivers for them. To identify the devices, it might be easier to examine them in Windows 10.

Regarding 5K support over Thunderbolt: plugable.com has a small list of motherboards indicating which support two streams over Thunderbolt for their Thunderbolt 3 to dual DisplayPort or dual HDMI adapters. I suppose those same lists will tell you which Thunderbolt 3 ports can drive 5K on the LG display. For example, my GA-Z170X Gaming 7 has a Thunderbolt 3 chip that gets only 4 lanes of DisplayPort from the integrated CPU graphics, so it can't work with the LG display at 5K

Yes, I tried the EDID stuff. That was the first thing I did.

The HP simply does not work with nVidia's 5K configurations. The edits to make ATI cards work in 5K MST display mode, however, will probably work with the HP. Personally, I switched to all Dell UP2715K's. They look better, are slightly more compatible, and are available at reasonable used prices on eBay now.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you all know I have the LG UltraFine 5K working at full 5K resolution along with all USB functions working correctly (camera, speakers, etc). It seems like, for now, using AMD cards are the way to go with this display. When using my Nvidia Titan XP card, I could get it work at 5K but it was inconsistent and very unstable (perhaps I could eventually get this working correctly, but I was fed up with messing with my system for 3 days straight trying to get that working). I got this working with the Gigabyte Alpine Ridge card, BTW.

GA-Z270X-UD5 and Alpine Ridge ? Good to know ! Is the sound working? I had troubles...
