What was your primary reason for building a hackintosh?

I would like to know what your PRIMARY reason was to build a hackintosh.

Paying premium prices (300% to 400% over) for hardware that is 3-to-4 Generations out of date makes zero sense. I have bought 4 Mac's (512K, Performa, Imac and a MacBookPro) although i enjoyed each i could not justify in my mind to continue the poor price/performance ratio. Did i mention the fact that the closed boxes are designed to make it difficult to upgrade components like a video card etc.... Building it yourself allows you to re-use components need be (Case, Power Supply, Optical Drive) and Swapping a part if a specific part goes bad. I will still buy Some apple products when necessary but only when holding my nose.

I'm still running a mid-2012 system (which still works great, btw) and at that time there was no Mac Pro. When the new trashcan Mac Pro came out, it was (and remains) ridiculously expensive. So I answered [2] but it's also [1]. Same as most, it seems.

I've been on Mac since I purchased a Performa 6200 in 1996 to replace my Commodore 128. Since then I've bought 2 desktops and 5 laptops from Apple, as my entire family is Mac.

I was prepared to buy a new computer this year, but the new laptops that came out in the fall were only about 12% faster than my 2012 MacBook Pro. And run about $3100. My MacBook is still running great (typing on it right now), but wanted a dedicated computer for home recording. The laptop was out, I looked at iMacs briefly, then stumbled on Hackintosh.

For a third of what a maxed out iMac was running, I built my first Hackintosh. It took me about 3 days to build, 2 weeks to get it running smoothly software-wise, thanks to this site.

I have about 20 years of experience and thousands of dollars of software wrapped up in the Mac OS, but honestly, other than a laptop, I don't think I'll ever buy another Apple desktop. For three times the money, you get half the computer of a Hackintosh.

I did it because I absolutely HATE the way Windows works.
for all of my life, I never knew anything other than Windows, I grew up using windows, and with age, i started to notice
that Windows just never changes... it always stays EXACTLY the same.
Hell, they don't even bother changing icons from the 90's it's just ridiculous that no matter how much the outer shell will change
inside it will always stay the same shitty OS that will always break if you do something wrong.
it was a very very very common thing to find a Windows PC just loaded with junk and bloatware that slows everything down
and every time you turn it on like 50 ads pop up, and no matter how much stuff you uninstall and how much antivirus protection you have you just can't get rid of it.
And then I discovered I can install mac OS on PC, and since I'm not a gamer.... it was an obvious switch for me.

So yeah... once you go mac, you never go back.

I decided to build a Hackintosh 2 1/2 years ago since I wanted to play the occasional games here and there which the MacBook couldn't give me. I also enjoy the tinkering here and there.

So far it's been a blessing! I also have the newest gen MBP (the TouchBar model) and my Hackintosh is still faster (well, besides disk speed). The only thing that annoys me is that I can't use the beautiful LG 5K Displays - I have them in my second office and love the image quality.

I love to tinker, and try and make things do new and interesting stuff.

I've set up 2 different Hackinstoshes now with old and new hardware. It's the same reason I dual-boot linux and windows on my main machine, stretching the hardware and my brain.

I've learned a ton, and there's a lot to really like about MacOS:

It's just so much prettier than windows, and plays nicer with LCD resolutions. And Apple's privacy policies are actually private. And it's Unix-based with a real terminal. And it's faster in daily operation. It's like Linux with the ability to run Adobe CC stuff!

I built two late last year. I didn't want to spend $3K+ on a system that I didn't know if it was going to be upgraded anytime soon.

I went Hackintosh because I wanted a powerful mac that I could expand and modify at a more affordable price.

All I wanted was a Mac Mini with dedicated GPU, nothing fancy just more powerful than this Intel onboard stuff.
