Hey, guys! This is my first personal build for a hackintosh, and I wanted to shed some light on the use of Thunderbolt for audio interfaces.

First, let me list my build:

- Gigabyte Z170x Gaming Ultra Rev 1.0
- 32gb crucial ballistix ram
- Gigabyte GEFORCE 950 GTX
- I7 Skylake 6700k
- 500GB SATA Samsung Evo 850 SSD
- 1TB SATA Seagate HD
- TP link- n900 wireless adapter
- Startech TB3 to TB2 thunderbolt converter
- Thermaltake X9 case

All in all, I followed the instruction guide to install Sierra onto this fresh build. I went into BIOS to check that the settings were right. Make sure XHCI Handoff is enabled and anything else they listed that pertains to you done. Booted up the USB drive, formatted my SDD, installed Sierra with quick settings in MultiBeast once at home screen along with some extras for USB and audio according to my motherboard.

Now for TB 3, after install and MultiBeast, the computer started normally and seems to be fully functioning. I realized, when I bought these parts, that the installation of Sierra would be easy. I wasn't, however, convinced that the Thunderbolt functionality would work, and, as I am an audio engineer, I needed the Thunderbolt ports to work most of all because my hardware audio interface and converters connects via TB2. To get them running, I had to unplug my drives and go back into the BIOS and change some of the Thunderbolt settings. I had to set the Thunderbolt to accept Legacy, enabled the Thunderbolt boot support and also enabled the Ignore Thunderbolt Option ROM; saved settings, rebooted into Sierra and the ports worked. I connect to the USB c/TB3 port on the motherboard to the Star Tech adapter and, then, to my Apollo 8. Only hiccup is that the interface needs to be connected and on before starting the computer. That seems to be the only issue and works wonders.

I wanted to share this because there seems to be little to no information regarding thunderbolt capable motherboards other than the GA UD5 TH and or UD7.

If you guys have any questions on how to get TB working let me know!

I am having thunderbolt issues:

I would LOVE to hear more about this. I'm looking to upgrade my motherboard (GA UD5 TH) and have been disappointed that nothing with TB has showed up on the buyer's guide. Thanks!

Ok so Aside from getting into thunderbolt via the GA ud5 and the ud7, I kinda took a shot in the dark on the GA z170x ultra gaming, It is listed under the buyers guide and has a single thunderbolt 3/usb c port on the mobo, I was unsure of the backwards compatibility between thunderbolt 3 and 2 or 1 but essentially I purchased this,

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod...startech_thunderbolt_3-_-12-400-713-_-Product

, after my fresh install I was struggling to get TB working, but it was as simple as going into my bios and changing the thunderbolt settings. upon restart my UAD Apollos host light lit up and as long as there is no hot swapping going on it seems to work fine. there is literally 5ms of latency at worst and thats with a full mix going. thunderbolt is awesome for audio and id recommend getting a similar setup as far as the computer goes for full compatibility, honestly id rather have a mobo with tb2 so that my Apollo would have connected directly, however this seems to be working perfectly as is. so for now I am stoked.

Hey astewie9226,
Do you think this would work for any matx or itx gigabyte boards?
Thanks

Hello, astewie9226.

Did you turn off applethunderbolt via dsdt or just deleted apple thunderbolt kext from the system directory?

I get an error AppleThunderboltNHI - poweredStart failed with status 0xe00002bc ...

Any thoughts on how to solve this?

I am literally on the same exact setup and I am going to try what you said to get my Antelope Orion Studio to work I hope this works, I got it USB but would rather it thunderbolt plus i run a UAD Satelite Octo...and i need that working as well

Any thoughts towards the ASRock Fatal1ty Z270 Gaming-ITX/AC motherboard…?

It has a single TB3 port, which I would love to use with an Apollo Twin Solo…!

I literally have the same equipment as you. An Orion Studio and a UAD Satellite Octo. Let me know if you get yours working. I've been using my Orion Studio via USB temporarily and I'm really hoping to convert my workstation PC to a hackintosh next week.
