6. For a new installation of OS X, you MUST erase and format the destination drive according to the following steps before continuing.

Trying to KEEP my file system in tact, do I skip this step? I've done this so many times and enough time passes that I forget each time.

Just think about it logically, when you format a drive or partition everything is erased.

Right, I know this. Basically I'm wondering if the definition of "new installation" means that no OSX has ever been installed on the drive or could reinstalling the OS be considered a "new installation". Seems vague. I keep updating and have been doing fine for about seven years or so, but I have my paranoid doofus moments.

If you want to keep your data don't format the drive / partition.

Those numbers mean motherboard (chipset) series: i.e., a 7-series is a H/Z77 series motherboard and 5-series refers to the P55 or similar older motherboard series.

The "Legacy" motherboards are the 5/6 series. While UEFI refers to the 7/8/9/10/20 series (modern BIOS) motherboards.
