Idling for 10 minutes causes Sierra to lag/freeze for a couple of minutes

If it is nothing to do with ACPI, can we please stop focusing on it and having users clog up this thread about it. I do appreciate your help though. With all due respect, you say photos isn't related but the fact remains I'm the one that's experiencing this issue, and visibly seeing the change with my experimenting with the photos app.

So far, what Ive put forward is the only option on the table and quite frankly, Ive repeated this many times with requests but I need users with the issue for replicating purposes. It keeps getting ignored in favour of this unrelated ACPI, which Ive proven does not matter. Obviously very few users here give 2 poops about helping me in replicating my scenarios. If it remains the case, I'll find the solution and not post about it.

Nonsense. The whole point of patching ACPI is so OS X/macOS talks to your hardware without patching ACPI you will have more problems just remember not patching ACPI is the same as not installing Drivers in Windows.

I have a theory, and my testing is quite close to (hopefully) revealing the answer.

My hypothesis is when a library is designated systems library, and we have a video in a format photos no longer recognises, it begins to panic. This would be especially true if we have iCloud photos enabled ( I don't) or photo streaming. I just have streaming. I've looked at activity monitor and the photos app runs in the background when it's closed quite often. It does lots of processing for streaming to other devices, and iCloud.

My testing has been using multiple pathways, to rule things in and out and so far...

It's not an actual photos (pic) problem. I ruled that out with multiple library and different avenue testing. It is video. When I remove video (all of them) in my SYSTEMS LIBRARY, the system NO LONGER FREEZES. As soon as I put them back in, it freezes. I'm converting them all to a more standard format (instead of the 3 diff types prior)to check the outcome. My hypothesis is that it WILL WORK.

Maybe later, I can work out which format is the one causing issues, I suspect it is the MOV. format. If it isn't a format issue, it may be one video that's corrupted. I cannot explain why the library had historically no issues and working and now it does not. Whenever a library is NOT designated a systems library, regardless of videos in the library, it will NOT FREEZE.

EDIT: library issue ties in with me earlier in this thread suspecting it was a SSD problem, as I did have the photos library on said SSD. I never got around to making it default library at the time though. In hindsight, it's likely that it is not a ssd problem, but photos,or really the videos component.

EDIT 2: As we don't see issues in legitimate macs regarding vid format, that I can see on the web, the proposal a video may be corrupted is also likely.

Sorry for being away for too long, I've followed the post without replying since I didn't have physical access to my hack. I've found really interesting your experience Wolfie81, unfortunately I don't have any video coming from an iOS device in my library, only videos I downloaded from various sources.
I think it will be useful to test wether a library containing only "iOS coming" videos is still causing the freezes or not. If it is I think it is definitely going to be a Graphic related problem and as long as nVidia or Apple fix the issue we have to live with it.

In addition it is not true that genuine Macs don't have this issue, there are a bunch of threads in the official Apple forum that are pointing to the stalling for detach... freeze. This lets me hope Apple is aware of the problem and will take care of it.

Already done and it worked, but without having any native iOS videos (currently I don't have an iPhone or an iPad since I've sold them to buy newer models) I can't tell you wether is a video format problem or a problem with videos in general and so related to graphics integration.

Can you test wether a library containing only native iOS videos (caught with an iPhone or an iPad) is still generating freezes?

I can't do that now as I'm in Oz and it's bed time. If you have the time, import your videos step by step according to format. E.g. Mov. Files first > test, m4 files > test.

See if it hangs on one format.

Least your early testing correlates to mine and puts other doubters away. This is a photos issue.

After a few days with my entire photos library deleted I can also confirm that this is the cause. No freezes since. I need to sync my entire iCloud Library now again and can then start to remove/add videos step by step. This will take a while.

This is very good news from the both of you. Now we just need to determine if it's a format issue or a singular corrupt video.

EDIT: Ive now converted all 145 vids of mine to m4v. format from a range of previous formats. Have them back in photos. Will see if the freeze continues.

Meanwhile, if one of either of you above do not convert to a format, but select your videos and reimport them in batches of 10-20 each day, and see if it freezes during one particular batch of videos. Then it'll help narrow down a corrupt video, if so.

Whats most interesting is the macOS will NOT FREEZE, regardless of video status in photos, if the library ISN'T a SYSTEMS LIBRARY.

I've downloaded all the originals from iCloud Photo Library and it won't event load the thumbnail of some old videos. They are really old .AVI files. Cannot even export them to find out which codec they are using.

Update: They are encoded with "Sunplus Motion JPEG Video (SP54)". I've removed them now from library and will wait for any freezes. Or hopefully no freezes.

I don't understand. Just backup your iCloud library to a backup drive and start again. Problem solved. Be honest, how many times do you need photos and videos you have taken on your phone?
This is definitely a video that is from another source, other then iPhone iPad and so on.
With only iOS videos there are no freezes.

That's not quite a solution, especially as others aren't experiencing it. Ive converted all files to m4v, and it freezes.

WIll try a diff format. Anyone know what the default iOS video format is?
