Hello folks,

Long time lurker here, looking for some recommendations.

I am currently running an Asus X99-2, i7-6900k OC to 4.0ghz, 64 Gig Ram, GTX970, 250Gig Samsung 850 Pro SSD.

My workload is extremely heavy on the machine, sometimes processing 8+ handbrake encodes at the same time, while it keeps up, it does encode slower than I wish. So I am looking for a Xeon Dual Socket setup with the most possible cpu power I can achieve for around $5000-6000 bucks that will outperform what I currently have.

Thanks in advance

Apple do not officially support X99 but a new Mac Pro is supposed to be arriving in the next few months which should help users of macOS that are looking for more power for demanding tasks. That said it is unlikely that we are about to see Apple return to dual processors which may make Windows are more appealing prospect.

You will get superior performance today by moving to (1) Windows on a modern dual processor board, (2)using existing Intel architecture such as a i7-6950X with an overclock to ~4.3GHz if this will work in macOS - do some further reading on this option.

Moving to windows is not an option as my scripting is all done with applescript, and relies on file labeling which windows does not have. I know X99 is not officially supported, but its working well with my 6900k which is why I asked. Thanks for your help

I have tried to cover an X99 processor upgrade, Dual Xeon which you asked about and Windows which for some users may provide a better option in some cases.

Dual XEON with macOS is really very niche and as such there are not as many builds around today as we saw back around 2013. I recommend that the best way to garner further information is to do some reading of the relevant threads linked to above. If you have any questions then you can @djppimp folk in a question so they get a notification.

Good luck
