Almost there with a complete working laptop, just need the sound.

The El Capitan fix is found here:
#22

I've tried to run through this on my machine now for Sierra, and no dice, No Input/Output Devices show up and I've got a grey speaker.

Would this work for Sierra or do I need to modify a file to get this up and running?

The "Guides" seem to be aimed at people who are used to doing this, for example the link ref'd says to do ./install_download.sh with no indication of where this file is, and I can reboot my laptop until the cows come home but there's still no sound.

I have AppleHDIDT.kext (edited the same as El Capitans method above) sitting on my desktop, I've injected it with KextBeast, booted Sierra without cache, rebuilt the cache, rebooted again, and nothing.

You must follow the guide, step-by-step. The download.sh and install_download.sh scripts come from previous steps in the guide (git clone).

I think you mean AppleHDAIDT.kext. But my guide does not use it.

Yes.

I'm running through your guide now, I've now done the download and install sh, and still no dice, are you using your own IDT kext then?

Edit: Ran through the guide, which basically looks like a terminal version of the HP probook installer (which mostly works on this laptop), and no dice, no sound.

That link from the looks of it saying the guy can't see the cache option, which I can, so that won't make a difference.

I need a working kext clearly then, as this guide is not relevant.

You must have made a mistake in following the guide.
Read guide, post #1, "Problem Reporting".

OK, looks like the patched AppleHDAIDT.kext from El Capitan doesn't work on Sierra.

I scrubbed the drive completely, installed Sierra fresh, and ran through your git install and I'm up and running.

Not sure of the advantages of building the amls as once install & download is run everything seems to be good?

Building the SSDTs and using the correct config.plist are all part of the guide and is necessary...
